Ski and snowboarding

Am I crazy?

I'm 14+2 weeks pregnant, and I'm off to verbier on sunday. Am i crazy to ski? I'm an ok skier, done it for years, no great style queen but competent enough to handle easy blacks.

I had a good scan two weeks ago, so far no problems in my pregnacy, morning sickness gone, tiredness pretty much gone. My gp has said it's ok, but everyone else is saying I'm mad. Was thinking of just skiing mornings (as it's a bit slushy in the afternoons anyway) and taking it easy. Any opinions gratefully received.

Hi MrsMar

As a fellow skier I don't want to spoil your fun but I wouldn't ski. You sound very competent but you can never account for other skiers who may not be so good and career into you and knock you over.

Haven't been to Verbier myself but am sure there are some lovely shops and cafes for you to explore instead!!!!

Good luck with the pregnancy!

friend of mine came with us at about 10 weeks - funnily enough to Verbiers! she was fine. afaik there's no medical reason not to - listen to your body, take it easy, maybe stay off the blacks - unless you know for sure they're easy, iyswim - I think your ligaments soften don't they? and if you did fall you might do damage more easily than normal. I positively think you're not mad. it's you last chance to go ski-ing kid-free - go and enjoy yourself.

We went skiing beg March in Italy, I was 6mths. I managed to ski for 3 half-days (did feel tired in the aftie), spent 2 in bed with the flu. If you're confident in your ability, go for it.

I normally ski some blacks also, but restricted myself to intermediates for this trip.

My MW was more concerned about bones being more brittle and possible fractures/breaks rather than the babe.

I had no falls and no injuries. The DH did however and fractured his arm!

I would go & enjoy yourself. I haven't skiied since before I had my dds, but at your early stage of pregnancy I probably would still go for it. When I was 26 weeks pregnant with dd1 I went to South Africa and surfed (carefully) which was great fun and as long as you don't exert yourself too much I'm sure you will be fine. (I'm assuming you're normally quite fit & healthly like I was?)

Enjoy!

I wouldn't for the same reason as Merlin - however safe you are its the other people you can't control. I guess if the slopes were empty I might, but having seen a few people skied into or more often hit by a snowboard it's not a risk I would take.

I would consider it carefully. When I was first pg i was determined to carry on as normal, and went waterskiing & windsurfing when 6 mth pg - was competent etc, and had no mishaps.
I also went canoeing when 8 1/2 months pg, fell in the river (in January).
I was fine, but now having my precious DC think I was out of my mind, and if was pg again would not do risky sports.
( Was skiing a few weeks ago - have been doing it for years etc etc, easy slope, last day was crashed into by a mindless bugger who came boarding over a bunp on a blind bend & sent me flying landing on my binding - agonisingly painful from bum to knee for about 4 weeks. I could not avoid a maniac crashing into me from nowhere - would not do if i was pg..)

I went when 6 months pregnant. Like you I'm a competent skier and I just took it easy, stuck to wide uncrowded runs and always made sure I was with lots of friends (and one of them always stayed behind to be able to shout if they saw a possible danger). I limited myself to a few hours a day so I never had tired legs etc.
Personally, I think that week I skied the best I have ever skied which apparently is because my centre of gravity was lower.
My midwife's only advice was that given the option I should fall forwards and not backwards! Baby had more protection at the front.

Go and enjoy it! I've only been once since then (Dcs are now nearly 6 and 2)

thanks for all your comments.... I've paid for the holiday, so I'm going, but I think I'll suck it and see with regards the skiing. I'll try a couple of days, taking it really easy and see how it goes. I like the tip about someone being behind you, my dh is usually behind me anyway (always slower than me, hehehehe!) so I might get him to do that, and keep an eye open for any nutters. I must say in 20 years of skiing, I've only ever been hit once, but that did result in a cruciate rupture, so I'd rather avoid that again!

Just wanted to post thanks to everyone who answered my query earlier. Just got back from Verbier and it was brilliant! Best week of the season so far apparently, great sunshine all week, fab snow and not too crowded (everyone must have been scared off by reports of bad snow)

I did as everyone recommended, stuck to reds, took it easy, had a break every couple of hours for a drink and bar of chocolate (!) and had an afternoon nap each day. I think all that fresh air and exercise did the baby some good too as I could swear I could feel some movements yesterday (am only 15+5 with first)
