Transporting helmets on our flight

We're taking the kids skiing for the first time this year (& first time I've been in about 9 years so very excited!)

We all have helmets (4 of us altogether) but I'm just wondering how others pack theirs for flying? Do you put them in case, take as hand luggage?

Thanks!

I tend to stick ours in the middle of the suitcase. Ski socks rolled up inside and lots of soft layers round about them.

in the case - though regularly see people with them strapped tot he side of a rucksack and taking it on as hand luggage...

In the case, with things stuffed inside it. I also put my boots in the case though my friends recently said they always take theirs on as hand luggage. I don't take many other-clothes once I've got those in the case!!!

Had it strapped to rucksack once. Complete pain in the arse as it kept bashing off everything!

We have a big saloman bag which fits a boot in either end, then the helmets packed with socks, salopettes etc in the middle.

It always looks a faff having them hanging off a bag through the airport.

Take inside rucksack each. Put goggles and gloves inside the helmet first. One helmet per rucksack. Put in first. Can still fit any other stuff needed on flight. That way I know they haven't been bashed by luggage handlers

Put them in hold baggage surrounded by clothes.

we have a small case each and a rucksack each. I put everyone's helmet on their case stuffed with balaclava, wrist warmers, gloves, goggles etc, anything that will fit and then all the clothes around it, indoor shoes. Wear snow boots and ski jackets on the plane.

We've never taken the kids' helmets before as most rental places provide them free for children if you're getting skis. Might be worth checking. DS has just turned 14 so we're going to squeeze his in as well as ours this year. We just put them in the suitcases with goggles and socks inside them. Boots for two of us take up a significant part of the suitcases but we still manage to get everything for four of us in two cases

I do the same. Pack on hold and stuff with socks inside and clothes all around so it is protected.

I have a standard mid sized samsonite suitcase. I can get my boots, salooettes, helmet, goggles and stuff for a weeks skiing in it easily. I pack my helmet in surrounded by thermals.
I wear my ski jacket.
Only issue will be if it ever gets lost!!
Can families with kids manage a suitcase this size each? I've only ever had to manage one children's suitcase between two adults.

Most ski hire places seem to have started charging for kids helmets from what I can see.

I prefer to put them in the hold luggage stuffed with socks etc. DH straps his to his rucksack to take in the cabin which drives me nuts. The number of times it has been bashed or dragged across the floor and it's a total PITA. Much better in hold luggage.

We pack our in with our boards. Boots go in there too. In fact we loaded up those board bags so well the helmets were extremely well protected!
Wonder if the rules will have changed though. I think a weight limit was put on board bags.

I pack mine in my case with clothes, etc. around it for padding. I do worry about handling in the hold but I figure I'm clumsy as hell so I'm probably more in danger of banging it if it's strapped to my rucksack/bootbag than padded in the suitcase.

I wish I had a nice padded bag of some kind for it tbh but then that's only one more thing to carry - and I don't have my own skis so I take my boots as hand luggage to avoid paying for ski carriage.

Not a ski helmet but a riding hat (same difference - shouldn't be dropped thrown around and protects your head) I travel with mine in my hand luggage. There was a fun time with an orange airline once where they insisted I couldn't have it plus my handbag. So I wore it. For the entire flight. (Only an hour but still).

We put them in hand luggage. If you use a holdall, you can stick a helmet in sideways at one or both ends and still have loads of room in the middle.

ememem quality. I always say I'd do that, but suspect I'd bottle out Grin

I didn't it last year too when going off to Ascot. Wore my hat because they said no to carrying hat and hand luggage.

Much fancier.
