i keep reading about thermal suits for hire, but am not sure what they are. are they thermal underwear or outer wear? if they are outer wear, would you use them as an alternative to salopettes? we have all the usual ski wear plus lots of thermal long johns. do we need to hire thermal suits as well? and what about themal boots ... will normal fur lined snow boots suffice?

When I went to Lapland (as an adult, Santa Claus not involved) I wore my winter mountaineering kit, with thermal overalls over the top. The overalls were hired from the place we were staying.

Thanks. so would salopettes with thermal long johns be adequate for husky sleigh rides etc or do we need proper thermal suits?

incidentally, we are keeping the actual santa bit to a minimum! we dont like commercialism and booked this holiday as a last minute bargain skiing holiday, not becuase santa lives there, lol. also not going to a busy resort and plan to do lots of skiing and other outdoorsy stuff.

sorry, just wasnt sure how your mountain kit compares to ski wear...

BikeRunSki Fri 03-Dec-10 09:02:55

Sorry, just realised that I should have said a bit more.

Winter mountaineering kit is also what I ski in:

Thermal longjohns and long sleeved vest
Fleece leggings
Thin fleece top
Fleece jacket
Goretex jacket
Goretex salopettes (un-insulated)
Thin socks
Thick socks
Buff
Wooly hat when not wearing a helmet

That is what I wear if I am (well, was) doing something active.

Then I wore thermal overalls on top when doing something less active like reindeer rides, husky sledging. We also hires snow boots from the centre too. Obv for skiing/climbing was weraing skiing/climbing boots.

IF you keep warm you'll have a ball!

Have fun smile!

Also, gloves.

Thin, liner "magic" gloves.
Thick boiled wool/fleece/fibre pile gloves or mitts (mitts warmer)
Waterproof outers.

These are fab as main glove.

ah thanks. have ordered glove liners.

hmmm do i need long johns, salopettes AND fleece leggings?? will google fleece leggings as have never seen them on sale.

Try a specialist outdoor shop - Ellis Brigham or Cotswold Outdoor for example - what you actually want is "Powerstretch tights".

Here

Probably don't need them as well as LJs and insulated salopettes though. I wear them with LJs and non insulated salopettes (think posh waterproof overtrousers).
