tbh rather than that I think that certain names shouldn't be permitted - ie ones that contain offensive language. there really is no need to have names like that.

My son is 7 and reads very well.

I dont want him to come and read over my shoulder and see some of these posting names.

More importantly, we have a duty to our next generation of internet and forum users. (our childrend) What children learn from seeing posting names on here, is what is regarded as acceptable.

We cannot let children think that some of the names on here are acceptable. They might go and form their own identities based on names they see on mumsnet.

Because, it is on mumsnet, mum uses the site, it must be ok.
As parents, we endorse this product in front of our kids. We therefore have to show some responsibililty and wisdom in chosing our posting names.

And if some of us dont, well then you have to do it for us...

Hear hear, I don't want to see offensive words highlighted in bright blue. Usually if we use these words in a posting most people would asterisk them out. So why is it OK for a name .... (or could we insist on *s in names?)

this rather brings me back to why i teach my children that swearing is not ultimately BAD but that it is part of the language of adults. Those DC of reading age can surely understand this. This is not a site for children it is a site by parents for parents, to quote an important strap line

Agree with others, this is a site for adults, last thing I worry about when typing a post is whether or not a child will read it.

Nobody moderates out the rude words, but I for one, would type Bl*DY, rather than the actual word. Many posters amend words to "farkin" or "sht" etc. Quite rightly, I feel.

I am against censorship on MN tbh. There are other fora with swear filters if people really can't deal with seeing the odd fuck on the screen.

That said, if most people think there should be no sweary names then I'm not going to hang onto mine just for the sake of it.

But most people don't have an issue with your name. In fact on the other thread some posters were saying your name was inspired/amusing etc.
They were having a go at one poster in particular and I think that is just nasty. And childish. Particularly when that poster was accused of being attention seeking and in actual fact it was someone else who started a thread about them which she then took in good humour.

Perhaps instead of allowing names at all, MNHQ could assign us all a random string of numbers. After all, what is offensive to some is not offensive to all.

For example, I may find a name with the word monster in it offensive because if my son reads it he may believe that monsters are real and posting on the internet and that could give him a complex for life.

Oh, and if that was too subtle for you? I think this is the most ridiculous request I have ever seen on MN. And that's saying a lot.

I agree - there are a couple of names on here with f*ck in them and I don't like to see it.

At the risk of getting flamed, I think it is slightly different if the word appears within a post, a) because it is less obvious to someone glancing (i.e. not bolded and in a blue stripe!) and b) because it is usually there for a reason, not just gratuitous in a name (yes, I know there is an arguement that this is a double standard, but to me it is slightly less offensive than just having it as your screen name).

I would like to see a ban on offensive names personally.

I don't agree with the argument that it is mumsnet, not kidsnet - I'm not a kid but I still don't want particularly want to see it.

I don't mind what people call themselves but I would quite like the facility to hide them if I deem them too offensive in the vicinity of my dcs.

I have no problem with freedom of speech etc, but just want to limit exposure as I feel necessary. I think it would be sensible.
