Ok so you know we asked you about biscuits and Austin Reed...

... well here's why. Many many Mumsnet moons ago a small thread sat on a leaf was started. That thread was titled: "If oyu name si Linda you are an admin perosn at a hospital" and, once folks had deciphered it, it went on to blossom into a Mumsnet classic.

Anyway, as we are wont to do here at MNHQ, we pounced on your ingenuity, wit and brilliance and thought (whilst stroking our beards) how can we plagiarise this idea? And lo after many months locked in the shed with nothing more than a Greggs' sausage roll and a froot shoot for company, Tech has transformed your our scheme into (we hope you'll agree) a corruscating and beautiful reality.

For no longer will you have sweat over the relative merits of Thomasina vs Sequoia for your baby girl - now you can just ask the wisdom of Mumsnet (at least you will be able to once we've all added our two pennies worth to it).

And so, without further ado, let us unveil the Mumsnet Baby Name Finder. Whether it's a Precious First Born or a soon to be Neglected Subsequent Child you're looking to name, you'll find the perfect moniker right here.

Please have a play and let your prejudices run riot!

(ps please bear in mind it's meant to be light-hearted - we don't really think any of offspring will grow up to be Hedge Fund Managers grin)

MadameCastafiore Tue 21-Jul-09 19:23:35

My poor baby is nameless - they cannot find a match for a Boden Wearing, Waitrose Shopping, Rich Tea Finger eating Prime Minister! sad

edam Tue 21-Jul-09 19:24:22

doesn't work for me, either.

(surely they mean barista as in person who works at Costa Coffee?)

Ewe Tue 21-Jul-09 19:24:46

I think we have to put in the information, I just searched my DDs name and added nicknames for example, we can then rate likely job/biccie choice etc

MadameCastafiore Tue 21-Jul-09 19:24:51

Isn't it one of those folk who pull your expressos in Starbucks and not like a proper legal person?

KingRolo Tue 21-Jul-09 19:24:53

It's trying to get me to add girls' names as boys' names!

nickytwotimes Tue 21-Jul-09 19:25:49

Ooh, it's FAB!

just talk amongst yourselves. I may be some time...

Ewe Tue 21-Jul-09 19:26:32

If everyone does this I assume the search function will begin to work?

KingRolo Tue 21-Jul-09 19:26:49

...and boys' names as girls' names

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 21-Jul-09 19:26:58

Ah yes, well, sorry, as I thought I'd explained but clearly not very clearly - it won't work properly until we've all filled it in a bit - ie we need to say what we think about Linda before anyone can find out what it means to be called Linda (if that makes sense?)

It's not meant to be barrister - barista (ie exotic coffee bar person) - though clearly they're interchangeable wink.

nickytwotimes Tue 21-Jul-09 19:27:21

Ladies, we need to add to it.
Our mission, should we chose to accept it, is to fill this name thingy with our own prejudices.

What could be better?!

<rubs hands with glee>

janeite Tue 21-Jul-09 19:27:58

Barista - is that a coffee maker person?

Ewe Tue 21-Jul-09 19:28:14

Yes, I just searched on the info I added to Matilda...

Interior Designer
Choco Liebniz

and it came up with Matilda. Once people have been on it for a while it will be genius invention!

funnypeculiar Tue 21-Jul-09 19:28:37

Fabulous - love it grin

silverfrog Tue 21-Jul-09 19:28:49

It couldn't find a name for my mythical child either. I get that names need to get rated ec, but did think the drop down selector bit would work...

southeastastra Tue 21-Jul-09 19:28:57

omg it's really judgemental!

SetSquare Tue 21-Jul-09 19:29:14

It didnt work for me

interiror deisgner
docle and gabanna
Dutchy Originals

Ewe Tue 21-Jul-09 19:29:42

<hands out judgey pants>

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 21-Jul-09 19:30:55

You can add missing names Silverfrog. Just type it in search and it will give you the option to add it if it's not on our list (sorry for any obvious ommissions).

funnypeculiar Tue 21-Jul-09 19:31:25

Right, how do you add a name (clicked on add a name, it told me to search for my name, and then once I'd done that, couldn't find anywhere to add it...)

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 21-Jul-09 19:34:51

search for the name in the Tell me about box - if it's not there you should get a link to add it for a boy or girl?
