Chat threads

We are going to start "retiring" threads in the _chat topic once they are over 30 days old.

What this means is that once they are 30 days old (since last contribution rather than since starting) you won't be able to add messages to them any more - they'll still be in the archive search, they just won't have the "add a message" box at the bottom, and they won't be in the thread lists under the topic. This list is at over 8500 entries currently and becoming useless.

If archive searching starts to slow down, we might start deleting chat threads from the board altogehter after a certain time. As the content of these threads tends to be chats (surprisingly enough) rather than requests for information, there's not a huge amount of point keeping them for future reference.

On the subject of chat, we are currently test-driving chatroom software with a view to putting a live chatroom up on the site - for them as wants.

You want a chat room?! After the way MN has gone recently?! Madness!

I'm not that keen on the chatroom idea, I like MN just the way it is.

I don't think we should have a chat room at all.

It should be a Mortal Combat Arena.

It would be a mortal combat arena. Sorry, I think this is a bad idea.

nothing more would ahve happened than posting ona thread as we are still online, and ai am guessing there would be a way of modding a live chat room, so someone could be booted out.

Actually, if you need a chat room mod, can i do it? Would love to wield that power!

Lots of people have asked for a chat room.

I suspect it will run alongside everything else - if you don't want one don't go there. I dn't want one and wouldn't use it but it doesn't bother me in the slightest if there's one there for hose who do want it.

People want it so fine - let's have a chat room.

yes people have asked before, ad it might be easier for storage cpacity for mn maybe? Or am i talking out of my arse?

But... the fallout from being kicked out of the chatroom? The endless complaining and b*tching... do we really need it?

Report
Snugs · 09/03/2005 09:46

Hate the idea, really hope it doesn't happen

Report
katierocket · 09/03/2005 09:47

think that would be an error

Report
lou33 · 09/03/2005 09:48

fallout is fallout. what happens when there is an argumentative thread on mn now? Another thread starts up discussing it! What's different?

There was the same sort of unwillingness voiced when the chat area was started iirc

Can't we have some kind of thread where you get to vote yes/no?

I am an old dinosaur so please enlighten me. How does a chatroom differ from how MN works now?

Hurrumph.

I know you are busy, but can't you just get on with updating the review section - after all, thats what used to set mumsnet apart from all the other yawny chatsites on the web.

Report
Snugs · 09/03/2005 09:50

redsky - chatrooms are 'live' so no record is kept of the conversation. If you ain't there, you don't get to join in.
