can we see on mumsnet how many people are online on here at once at a particular time?

He has also asked if we can have a new abbreviation in his honour DSB (dip shit boyfriend). grin

SammyK Wed 08-Oct-08 22:19:14

bumpety bump

EachPeachPearMum Wed 08-Oct-08 22:24:40

I would love a 'counter' too, of how many are logged in. I'm sure the new servers would be able to handle it!

Or would this out the fact that most posters are code? wink

PeaMcLean Wed 08-Oct-08 22:30:12

Do those counter things register how many people actually have the site open or how many people are logged in. Cos they're different aren't they? Just curious...

Cappuccino Wed 08-Oct-08 22:31:07

oh I love DSB

can we have DSH too?

SammyK Wed 08-Oct-08 22:48:15

{taps finger impatiently waiting for tech's response}

ohh my *'s have gone missing shock

I think that is a fab idea

I've seen some websites where you can actually see who is on line, their names are at the bottom of the screen.

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 14-Oct-08 12:43:49

We can certainly look into this - what do others feel about a counter - would it add something to your mumsnet experience?

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween Tue 14-Oct-08 12:44:46

"would it add something to your mumsnet experience? "

um... not that I can think of.

CharCharBaGOOOOOOORE Tue 14-Oct-08 12:46:46

Not really, but it might be interesting! grin

witcheseve Tue 14-Oct-08 12:57:46

I would like a counter, then when I'm posting late at night I can see if I'm talking to myself.

Don't like the idea of everyone named when online. It would be like facebook. Sometimes you don't want everyone knowing you are online.

SpookyMadMummy Tue 14-Oct-08 14:02:05

Would be nice to see some statistics

Most users online

How many users currently online

How many users registered

Not fussed about names tho..

<<nosy>>

SaTanicGore Tue 14-Oct-08 14:11:04

Hate the idea, sorry.

Hate the idea of seeing exactly who is online even more.

It is irrelevant half the time anyway. Loads of people leave MN open all day, doesn't mean they are actually sat in front of the screen actively participating.

MN was once unique amongst forums. It now seems to be slowly morphing into a copy of all the rest. Such a shame.

WigWamBam Tue 14-Oct-08 14:18:08

I was going to post pretty much what StG has. Agree wholeheartedly with everything she said.

TigerFeet Tue 14-Oct-08 14:19:15

It'll be tickers before you know it

<<shudder>>

I don't have an issue with a "number of users online" feature - it won't detract from my MN experience (lol at that phrase - MN experience) but I don't think it would add to it either.

I think there would be uproar if there was a list of who was online - can you imagine the more needy paranoid sociable amongst us getting upset if someone they liked was online but was ignoring a thread they had started.

I like how easy it is to be anonymous on this site when you want to be.

SaTanicGore Tue 14-Oct-08 14:19:28

<<slips WWB a tenner>>

coppertop Tue 14-Oct-08 14:20:36

I agree with StG and WWB. MN works so well because it's not like other sites.

Next thing you know we'll be getting tickers...

WigWamBam Tue 14-Oct-08 14:21:23

<Pockets tenner, decides to follow StG around the board agreeing with her>

PsychoAxeMurdererMum Tue 14-Oct-08 14:23:11

I don;t want to know who was online/not online.

if I want a certain person then I ring them/email them/text them.....or sit on here is a <<sulk>> cos I have no contact for them bar here.

wink

coppertop Tue 14-Oct-08 14:23:49

LOL at cross-post with TigerFeet.

And where's my tenner, StG?

<harrumph>

JodieO Tue 14-Oct-08 14:24:40

Other forums I use only count people as online if they were active in the last 5 minutes so it wouldn't count if you just had the page open.

SaTanicGore Tue 14-Oct-08 14:31:29

<<checks wallet>>

<<slips coppertop a fiver>>

<<Googles 'how to rob a bank'>>

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 14-Oct-08 14:38:54

Could we just lay one thing to rest once and for all? The next thing will never ever be tickers grin.
