Hide threads containing a particular word or phrase

I would like to suggest a feature which allows you to automatically hide all threads containing a particular word or phrase. I know you can already hide a given topic or thread, but this could be much more useful.

It would allow people with PTSD to avoid certain triggers (eg by blocking words like "rape").

This could also be a nifty solution for those who want to read the feminism board but don't want to see any threads relating to trans issues. If this feature was available they could simply decide to hide all threads that referred to eg "trans" or "transwomen." This would be much better than trying to split the board into sex/gender and other issues (which IMO seems unworkable given the nature of the threads on FWR).

Would such a feature be possible?

Great idea - I'm not techy at all so don't know if this is possible but it seems a better solution than splitting the boards.

Perfect solution.

Ideally but the way MNHQ's tech is set up, I doubt it would be possible. Even big tech websites and forums that I know either can't or won't do this (for one of them, you have to rely on a specific third-party software to be able to do something like that).

I doubt MNHQ, who won't/can't give seemingly easy features like the edit button, would/could do it. It would be great if they do though.

Good idea, except in those cases where a poster had 'trans' hidden and would not see posters on trans fats or Trans Siberian or so on :) - so maybe it would need to be board specific?

I was wondering about whether the OP could have some keywords that need to be selected (like hashtags) that would assist in facilitating that. I know it might need a third party ‘plug in’ but it might be achievable.

Of course… threads can go in unpredicted directions and as such some may ‘sneak’ Hmm through but it might catch enough.

It would also give another way for those threads to be targeted, but then using AS allows that anyway I guess.

Helleofabore · 14/06/2021 08:48

Oops.

Obviously the keywords would feed into a filter that users can set.

I like this idea. Instructions could be stickied at the top of the board.

If this is too complicated to implement, perhaps we could have an option where the OP when creating a thread can tick a box to indicate if it:

  • "contains distressing content" and
  • in FWR, it "relates to the impact of transgender ideology on women".

I imagine it would be easier to then filter those threads for those who want them to be filtered.

I just think the splitting FWR idea is throwing the baby out with the bath water. There are probably a fairly small number of women who want to avoid the trans issues, and it would be better if there was some opt-in approach for them to block posts they don't want to see.

I'd also like to be able to have threads with certain words in highlighted. If it was something I was interested in and wanted to know when threads were posted about it

Would it help more if there was a topic area in FWR for discussions relating to trans issues? There are already several topics in that category anyway so presumably it would be fairly straightforward to add another.

No. There is another long thread on this which prompted my request. The sub-forums seem to be rarely used and it's not fair that the majority of FWR posters should suffer because a small number of Mumsnetters want to read FWR without seeing threads realating to sex/gender issues, which is IMO an existential threat to feminism. I would not have been particularly aware of these issues if I hadn't stumbled across the threads in FWR.

Hi @YourSexNotGenderIsOnFire,

Thanks for suggesting this. We're always open to new ideas so we'll be passing this on for further discussion in the office.

We'll keep an eye on this thread too to see what the general consensus is.

Thanks again.

This is a much better idea than a separate board.

I'm open to this suggestion as the thing I can't get my head around is whether it's is possible to discuss Feminism without reference to Sex and Gender. Therefore how will people know whether to post in Feminism or in Sex and Gender? If MN create the sub-board, we are likely to still have posts showing up in either place and further development work needed, so let's consider lots of options up front.

Having a set of filters for key words or areas of interest would be good, like personal settings beyond being able to select favourite board maybe.

I do prefer this to the idea of having a separate board away from Feminsit chat, or splitting it further into sub categories (mostly as I would then end up repeating posts and we would get TAAT or I would post about based on topic, like surrogacy for example) , but I don't know, can't we scroll past things that aren't of interest, whether it be plain from the title or the OP?

FWIW I think that MNHQ do a good job of supporting free speech generally and each of us need to be responsible for what we expose ourselves to. There are times when I don't click on or read stuff about rape or more violent murders of women as my head can't take it. I don't want to filter that out necessarily I would just not click and read that particular thread if I felt unable to cope with it that day.

I think having a button to indicate a content warning would be useful but then it would need to be for different things, not just self ID/gender ideology, but also for violence, rape, murder, porn, prostitution and child abuse, etc.

I like the idea of a content warning button. Some OPs add content warning to their headers but some don't, and I've seen MNHQ edit titles to add later. So, you could have a content warning for potentially distressing content across the whole board, and a similar idea in FWR to mark threads which discuss the issue that people don't want to see, to make it easier for them to hide threads or scroll on by.

This seems easier than a split, I was on a thread yesterday trying to figure out how that would work in practice and it seemed complicated.

This is a great idea.

It would be good if there was an option at the top of the FWR board where you could click "hide" and the sex/gender threads were all hidden, just for that visit too.

There are days where I feel that the onslaught by TRAs against women and girls is so overwhelming and distressing that I don't want to see it, and I would like to read and join in on the other threads on FWR about other women's issues , eg abortion, the harms of porn, childbirth etc.

But the following day then I will feel more able to stomach it and I will want to see them again, so I wouldn't want it to be a one-time selection that couldn't be reversed.

Report
Floisme · 14/06/2021 13:23

If it's possible to do this, it sounds a much better plan than creating a split board, which feels less workable every time I think about it. This way, anyone who doesn't like current set up has the means to do something about it, and it also puts the onus on them to take action, instead of expecting the current board users to move over.
I'd be interested to hear what objections there are, if any.

I feel exactly the same at times.

How about mute derail not in good faith user button just for FWR.

That way I can read the informative stuff without all the unnecessary clutter because that’s what FWR is - information & discussions it’s not like AIBU where enter at risk of having your arse handed on plate.

Definitely against dividing up the FWR boards as it will be to messy & disorganised of what goes where as related to both feminism & WR.

Please leave it way it is - Thread title gives gis of what it regarding.

I think it’s a good idea.

I would find it really useful because sometimes I’ll be reading a random thread where a miscarriage story is shared - I find this distressing and it’s difficult to avoid.
