‘Thread removed due to concerns from the OP’

AlGorithim · 06/06/2021 21:38

I’m sorry, what? I clicked on a thread which a number of us had given thoughtful replies aside from the usual LTB crew only to find this message. What does this even mean? What concerns?

What’s the point of making an effort to reply to a Relationships post when the OP can demand it’s taken down because people aren’t giving her the answers she wants?

Totally agree OP. When I was new to Mumsnet I started a thread without knowing I couldn't delete it and then worried it would be outing so messaged to have it deleted to be told no it couldn't be. Then I see threads being deleted left, right and centre due to 'concerns'

The thread I’m thinking of didn’t even say ‘privacy concerns’ it was just ‘concerns’.

I’d ask @MNHQ what their criteria are for deleting threads at OP request but it’s pointless as they won’t tell us.

There have been one or two lately where the message just says "OP has requested deletion". Given that MN profess that they won't delete just because the OP asks, this seems really odd.

It is frustrating, but try to keep an open mind.

Once I dated a total weirdo who tried to find my names on here & used the info to attack me. I had to ask for my posts to be deleted, and it must have looked odd to other posters.

Its not just relationship section. There was one in employment this week which had a LOT of informed people give great advice, however as it seems wasn't going the 'yes, you're right they're awful' route.. zapped!

EU law protects people's personal information more .

I get it’s annoying but I do think that given the raison d’etre of mn is to make parents lives easier, and a thread is causing real life distress then that has to override people’s annoyance at giving advice.

Or they get removed as identifying

@esterwin what eu law? Gdpr does not apply to individuals using social media on their own behalf.

I honestly think too many posters get over invested.

So you decided to reply to a thread that got deleted? So what? The OP owes you nothing, Mumsnet owes you nothing, just choose to reply to future posts with less detail. There has to be better things to be doing that writing on this bloody forum anyway 🤣

@AlGorithim we're not sure what thread you mean, but if you drop us a line at [email protected] we'll look into it. We really do try and avoid removing threads where possible as we know just how annoying it is when you've invested time and energy into responding. @lavenderandwisteria is spot on - we're all about making parent's lives easier (it even says it on the wall at MNHQ in case we forget Wink) and if a thread is causing considerable distress to an OP, we don't wish to further add to that.

PS: must admit we could have been clearer in our deletion message in this case. We'll look into it.

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet here's another one with a spurious deletion message. I was on the thread and a number of people disagreed with the OP, presumably hence why she requested deletion.

Message from MNHQ: OP has requested deletion

So can we just request for threads to be deleted now without any concern for privacy or anything else?

It's just the usual line when a thread isn't agreeing with OP and they throw a shitfit about it to HQ. I always think 'what a pathetic person' when I see that message pop up.
