Why has the formatting changed?

It changed a long time ago, admittedly.

It used to be that you could type and then go back to make a single word bold or underscored, but now you have to plan ahead and select the format BEFORE typing and can't do it retrospectively by selecting the T for text box in the MN app (circled in red below).

Why did this change? And can it please change back again - it's not as user friendly like this.
