One Madeleine McCann thread - is that a good plan?

It has a been suggested a couple of times that we confine all discussion of Madeleine McCann to one thread. This is possible - we'd carry a notice to that effect and delete all other threads, writing to the OP telling them to post in the one thread.

People could still discuss developments but there wouldn't be multiple threads in active conversations (and indeed we are planning adding facility to exclude a thread - so folks could avoid altogether).

Seems to us - given the rancour of the last few days that this might be the best solution.

Thoughts please?

What an absolutely fantastic idea! Yay! I really didn't like the bickering - was not nice.

Can we only have one take fairytale thread too. It upsets me to hear about Humpty Dumptys short comings.

Good idea

TheSocialistWorker Wed 12-Sep-07 10:29:14

I started one last night with a polite request to use it

It's not the proliferation of threads that's the problem, it's that they draw their thread titles from the lowest possible rumour on Sky News

So I think it's a good idea

BewilderbeastofBolsover Wed 12-Sep-07 10:29:17

i think its a good idea and maintains the right to free speech (whether I like the topic or not) without having active convos fill up with distresing thread titles

Piffle Wed 12-Sep-07 10:30:19

yes!

totaleclipse Wed 12-Sep-07 10:31:00

I would suggest not deleting the other threads, so people can refer back to them, but not allow them to be posted on, we can help bump them to 100 if you likegrin

Piffle Wed 12-Sep-07 10:31:01

and to name it madeleine mccann not some lurid title

totaleclipse Wed 12-Sep-07 10:31:39

1000, even.

belgo Wed 12-Sep-07 10:31:52

the Madeleine threads don't bother me, I manage to filter them out mostly, but it does bother me that people get so upset about it.

If the solution is to have just one thread, then that's fine, although I have to say, you're copying Netmumswink

Tiggiwinkle Wed 12-Sep-07 10:32:07

Anything which stops the nonsense of the last few days would be a good idea in my opinion! Sounds like a very sensible solution.

octoandflash Wed 12-Sep-07 10:32:12

yes

and the ones about cliques, unfriendliness etc -just delete them fgs

CountessScabula Wed 12-Sep-07 10:32:31

Great idea

oliveoil Wed 12-Sep-07 10:33:06

oh yes indeedy

I think Morningpaper said this yesterday

and may it use her full name and not Maddy or LO or something including body fluids or whatnot?

thanking you kindly

JustineMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 12-Sep-07 10:33:50

No we wouldn't delete the existing threads but we'll exclude them from active conversations. Any new threads we'll delete. When the one MM thread gets to 1000 we'll clear out some messages (or something like that anyway - Tech'll figure it out) to allow it to continue.

TheSocialistWorker Wed 12-Sep-07 10:34:34

today's morningpaper is the Socialist Worker

oliveoil Wed 12-Sep-07 10:35:53

if we give Tech a fiver will he delete the more ghoulish ones?

thanks
