Could we somehow apply it to whole sentances please? I have just made a right balls up on another thread and now the emphasis is all wrong.....

And we did ask a while ago if we could have a strikethrough function. What was the verdict on that?

Wouldn't it be easier to ask Tech to drop in a rich text control?? FckEditor is cheap if MN can't get away with using it for free.. ...the ExtJS control is completely free (and less tricky to get working nicely..).

Come on tech.. ..lets have colours and prettiness in our posts...

MN could do with a bit of livening up though - it's a bit drab.. ...obviously the posts aren't the slightest bit drab but the look and feel - very 6 years ago... ..which is about 42 in Internet years.. ...so middle-aged...

:-p

it's not going to make a whole lot of difference.. ..you can easily limit the number of things people were allowed to format (bold, italic, strikethrough (drop all the colours - don't know what I was thinking there) but make it easier for people to do - people still prefer Word type interfaces to having to remember how to make something bold etc...

Long threads could be speeded up by cleaning up some of the template code and not doing stuff like loading the same thing twice per page...

The tables that are used should be consigned to the bin and everything moved to nice cachable stylesheets...

...then start thinking about only refreshing the parts of the page that actually NEED refreshing...

I agree with both of you, the MN platform is a bit archaic.

But, BUT: Part of me feels that it is exactly the lack of
techie wizardry that inspires MNers to compose witty and
expressive posts. Which is probably the main thing that I
love about this place.

Would we not lose some of the MN magic if colour, lots
of emoticons etc were introduced?

possibly although my main point was around making it easier for users to use the functionality they already have (oh and adding strikethrough). I back-tracked on the lurid colours part.. ...surely a couple of buttons isn't going to make people forget how to compose witty posts??

Look and feel though deserves to be updated a little bit...

Sorry, HT, missed your last comment on the colours.
I am probably being a bit overprotective here..
just can't stand the thought of MN growing up!

MarsLady!! I was about to stalk you on another thread -
you know what, I think I will!

Will have to get permission from the missus (two nights
Salsa on the trot, will have to offer massages/car etc
to make that happen!) but should be on the cards.

The weather is pretty cold so no worries about the air con
