New registration and sign in forms

Hi all,

Just to let you know we’ve slightly rearranged the login and register forms to make it easier to both sign in and create an account. If you’re logged in already it won't affect you – you’ll only see the changes if you need to sign in again or log in from a new device.

Previously we had one page that contained both the sign in and register forms, with tabs to switch between them. If you wanted to register but landed on the sign in tab, you had to click to get to the register form and vice-versa.

Now, you just enter your email address and the site will automatically take you to the right place – no need for that extra click. Sites like The Guardian and Google use this flow too, and we believe it’ll provide a smoother experience.

What do you think? How could we make the process of signing in or registering with Mumsnet easier?

We’ll be tracking how it’s working and making improvements based on the statistics and feedback we receive, so your comments will be much appreciated.

Haha, I found this thread when I was trying to log in and it looked different, so I figured there would be something on this topic.
I think it works. The only thing I was just slightly confused about in the form was when they asked for the password, I was at first confused whether it was my email password or my password to this site, but I figured it was the MN password and I was right.
I think it's good, and may just take a little getting used to.

Yes, I had to check to make sure it was genuine!

I had to put in my email address, but after clicking on Next and being asked for my password I saw it was already in there - no need to input??

I do not like my password to be preset .

On my iPhone I am not getting the colour change when I have read a thread comment now.

Hi @WaterBird, thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it. Yes, you were right about it not being your email password – we'd never ask you for that.

To make it clearer, we'll update the text on the password field to read 'Your Mumsnet password'.

Hi @BlackBeltInChildWrangling and @Shampaincharly, thanks for your feedback.

The password field thing is because your browser has saved your login details at some point. It automatically enters the relevant saved password for your email when the page loads to make logging in more convenient. However it's possible to turn it off in your browser's settings if you don't want that to happen.

Thanks Matt. It's only ever done it with my mumsnet log-in, and I didn't ask it to. Strange, but true!

Thanks, Matt. I think it will clear things up for people logging in with the new regiration for the first time who don't already have their password saved.

Ive spent hours trying to get round this and I couldnt log in so tried to register under the name Helena Dave using the same e mail address you already have and it took it The only option the screen would give me was to REGISTER, Then i tried to delete this action hoping it wont wipe out my whole original account. Because i want access to my 8 year old account history and watchlist I dont want the register as a newbie option but thats the only option i was getting. Ive also had problems posting prior to this. I dont want my original account deleted Just the Helena DAve thing. that i did. I usually stay logged in but had to use a dfferent device hence this ridiculousness. So you might have already noticed strange activity coming from this e mail address Well THIS is why. Ive had no problem with fb and Twitter on this other device. Can you sort this please. Thank You

This is the e mail i sent to MN.

i received an e mail today saying it ought to be impossible to register as a newbie using the same e mail account MN are asking me to log out fully on all devices and then log back in.

THE OPTION TO DO THIS (log in) ISNT THERE THOUGH. thats the point im trying to make, I didnt post anything under the new account name. If i attempt to log out the only option that comes up is to register as a newbie. This problem isnt present on any other site that i use.

I googled mn log in and there are problems going back years. So im too worried about logging out on this old device as this is the only way i can get in at all.
