Local threads on Active are really annoying

Before MN decided to stop trying to make Local happen I’d get Local threads for my area appearing on Active. So assuming I lived in Bath I’d get

Local - Bath
Campaign to save the local library - meeting on Saturday 11th!

Now you’ve changed I get Local posts from everywhere cropping up in Active with not a clue as to where they refer to. So I’ll see an intriguing thread

Local
Free tickets available to see Aidan Turner’s new one man play - Warning: contains nudity.

And I’ll click on it to see a cryptic reference to event taking place at St John’s church hall or St Peter’s C of E Primary School and eventually work out that it’s in Inverness.

If you’re going to display all Local posts to everyone then can you at least display what area they’re on in the summary please?

OutsideContextProblem you're right and we're sorry - it must have been hugely frustrating, missing the Aidan Turner thing. Inverness gets all the luck. Grin

This is to do with the fact that the URLs are now dynamic, a result of being able to specify 'within' 5/10 miles etc when you search. It's on our Big List of things to do already so will be fixed eventually. It might take a few months though, so apols in the meantime for the inconvenience. If we hear that he's coming to Bath, we'll DM you.

As far as I understand it the new Local topics/boards are still in Beta test at the moment, so I guess that these issues should be ironed out eventually?

The other really (really) annoying thing about the Local threads is that if you happen to see a relevant one on Active conversations and try to reply to it in the App (and do a long, helpful reply Wink), it DOESN'T POST Angry (yes, I am shouting!).

...I was so pissed off that I didn't fully explain that not only does it. Not. Post. Angry But the post disappears into the ether. At least, I presume it does as it's not showing up in "Threads I'm On" - and annoyingly, I can remember it happening before but that time I just thought I'd forgotten to post before exiting the App Angry

Oh no @prettybird I'm not surprised you're shouting! So sorry. Which app was it - iOS or android?

Aidan Turner told me my dog was cute when I saw him in the pub a few weeks ago. I know this isn't related to the actual OP, but, SWOON. I'm happy to relate he's gorgeous in the flesh, and very charming. I obviously couldn't think of a single thing to say to him so just giggled pathetically.

(Old) iOS @KateMumsnet

I've just tried posting on that Local thread which is now on "Threads I'm on" (because I had deliberately gone to my laptop) from my phone via the app and although it claims to have successfully posted, it has yet again disappeared into the ether.

I'd deliberately made it a short post though so as not to waste my time and to save my blood pressure ! Wink

Hi @prettybird,

Well, that's flipping annoying and clearly Something's Up. Sorry!

Can you post a link to the thread that you're trying to post on please? We can see that you managed to post on a Local thread on Monday - was that via the desktop site, not the app?

Ach, @prettybird, this is what I've found out from our Tech chaps: Because of recent changes in local, it's not possible to post on local threads in the app OR create local threads. We will very soon start allowing posting on local threads in the apps again, and a little while after that creating threads in Local will be possible.

I'm going to see if they can get a warning note on to prevent your situation happening again... stand by!

I'm currently on my phone so can't post links! Wink But I will so when I'm next on my laptop.

I posted on two local threads on Monday (after re-writing my long disappeared into the ether post for one of them Sad) on Monday from my laptop.

I now know not to bother replying to any Local thread until I'm back on my laptop - but this morning, just out of curiosity, tried doing so from the App. It claimed to have posted successfully, but as before, it has disappeared into the ether. Interestingly, it has registered enough to appear irritatingly again on "Watched" threads (have to keep on unwatching threads I post on: it's a useless duplication of "threads I'm on" to add them automatically to watched threadsConfused but that's a different rant Grin)

This was the Local thread on which my post disappeared when I tried posting via the app.

It's happened on other Local threads too.

KLAXON! By astonishing coincidence, Prettybird, this issue has been fixed this very week! It's just in testing now and the app team hope to be releasing it in the next few days - try again next week maybe, and let us know how you get on?

I’m bumping this thread because 3 months on, it’s still driving me up the wall.

See example at top of attached picture. It’s not Aidan Turner in the nude, but it’s definitely interesting. Where the hell is it?

As it happens it’s in Cardiff. How many people from Aberdeen will waste their time clicking on it? How many people from Cardiff will not bother clicking on it because they have given up being curious about Local threads?
