What happens to all the threads that are taken down to be looked at behind the scenes?

I see loads of threads that go poof for this reason, but I've seen many deleted for being a PBP, etc. so you know they're not that, yeah? I've then seen threads that are kept up because nothing looks suspicious behind the scenes, but they were never taken down to look?
