Euromillions advert

Tonight, on Active threads, I have adverts top, right, and left, of my reading panel. It's reduced the panel to such a small size I can't read it.

Please MN HQ, is there any way you can reduce this advert?

Those ads are really interfering with the usability of the site. Scrolling is very difficult on my iPad and it keeps freezing

Highly annoying advert, not the usual sort of thing you see and makes visiting the page a really poor experience

Just coming to start a thread about this. Talk page just kind of sits on top of the Euromillions ad, moving about, all small. Makes site unusable.

Thank you...it seems to have gone. 😀

I was just coming on to say about this as well. I'm going to try and attach a screenshot for MNHQ.

It really makes the site unworkable for me because it's impossible for me to increase font size and for my device not to end up shutting down due to rendering problems.

Sorry last paragraph isn't clear - my device won't render these ads properly if I attempt to resize texts which is making it impossible for me to access threads in chat currently. Though I'm able to here I expect that'll be gone soon as well.

Obviously the site is not disabled friendly anymore and I cant install adblocker my device us too old and no money to upgrade.

I'm also, for personal reasons, not happy to be seeing MN now generating revenue through gambling, you should also be aware that ad will make MN impossible to use in libraries or anywhere which blocks gambling sites.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback relating to the usability of the site, if you are having issues can you please tell us what browser/device you are using and if you are accessing the site via wifi or 3/4G?
We have been busy testing this format on multiple browsers and devices and it has not impacted the usability of the site or reduced the font in any way.
Please give us more information so we can investigate this for you.

Thanks

iPad. Safari. Mobile internet 3G mostly, rarely 4 (no option for wifi).

It's impossible for me to use any site that uses such ads due to disability. No one who uses a screen reader can use the site with ad placement like this so at the moment those ads block me from reading/using those threads/forums etc. I've not had it here (site stuff) but cannot use chat anymore and I've had it elsewhere as well.

I thought MN had strict guidelines about advertising, are those now gone? One related to advertising gambling. Not much point having forums for gambling addiction if you've decided you want people gambling to pay your bills.

It's worse on small screens as all you can see is ads even when sight is good.

I do understand you need ads. But these make MN unusable if you have a screen reader.

I meant to preview and add to my post above but hit post instead!

Hi WicksEnd,

Thank you for the reply
I am just testing on all devices but am unable to replicate. Can you tell me in detail how it is effecting the usability of the site for you ?
Thank you

It minimises the page so the advert takes up the screen above and to the left and to the right.
If you look at my screen shot, 'Active' would usually fill the page but the advert is forcing a smaller page size and font.
Beccas screen shot gives a better indication than mine due to the other problem of a slow loading pages on iPad/safari so the Euro millions ad hasn't fully loaded on my screen shot above.

This is on an iPhone in safari. The advert reduces the screen size and the advert scrolls and stays in the screen. I just leave MN when I get it. It stops me being able to read the site when normally on a phone screen it fills the screen. It's just stupid.

Still a problem for me.

It effects usability because users cannot resize the part of the screen they want to see (the middle) and read, the page just constantly reloads, sometimes it resizes but not only what users want to read, it resizes everything making the ad even bigger (assuming it renders ok, which it usually doesn't - mostly it means pages reloading constantly. There's another thread here in site stuff where tech are saying problems with pages reloading is 'unknown' rendering - it's not unknown, it's these ads which require a lot of rendering to show a page across multiple devices with screen sizes. Not everyone is using the latest device or iOS whereas staff at MNHQ tend to most likely test on most recent soft and hardware so won't get the same problem).

Screen readers are a problem because the ad is all around the page (except the lower part) making it very difficult for them to read the page consistently for users.

This a problem for all sites that use this type of ad and why I cannot use them anymore, I appreciate it's annoying for others, for some, it makes those pages unusable.

As it stands MN would no longer be recognised for being disabled friendly - I worked in the field, there's no way this site meets those requirements anymore, the standards are specifically set out for all commercial screen readers.

Basically, if you want your site to be recognised as disability friendly this particular type of ad needs to be gone. At one point MNHQ were interested in accessibility - you cannot have both accessibility and these types of ads.

I won't repeat what I said previously about generating advertising from gambling, but I will say MNs own ad rules prohibit such ads so those ad rules need to be got rid of now.
