I've been here for ten years now (dd3 10th birthday approaching)

When I started posting threads were hardly ever deleted. Sometimes people would ask for them to go and they were nearly always told to get a grip. This had a very positive effect on posting behaviour because it just wasn't possible to talk a load of bollocks on a thread and not have it come up to bite you later. It dealt with a lot of posters who would otherwise have time wasted.

That principle seems to have totally disappeared now. Threads are deleted all the time ' to protect privacy' when what seems to be meant is to protect the posters blushes because they've had their arse handed to them on a plate. Some posters in particular are getting threads, which people have spent time and energy answering, deleted repeatedly.

This is a website for adults and I think we all need to behave like adults. That means sticking by our comments. Could we try a no thread deletion policy for a bit? Threads with rl names could have those posts deleted but the threads still stand. Might encourage better posting behaviour.

I agree. Especially recently.

NoelHeadbands Fri 31-Mar-17 18:33:55

Totally agree.

hobnobsaremyfave Fri 31-Mar-17 18:37:31

Abso - bloody- lutely

ShakeofFara Fri 31-Mar-17 18:40:31

Agreed.

MrsMackenzo Fri 31-Mar-17 18:51:33

100% in agreement here.

BTW - Universitychallenging I saw and supported your contributions on one of the threads I think you're meaning (or if you're not I certainly am). star

BillyButtfuck Fri 31-Mar-17 18:56:09

Couldn't agree more. MN can alter identifying details out of posts without removing the whole thread.

VintagePerfumista Fri 31-Mar-17 19:09:30

Just posted on the other one.

But yes, absolutely.

They might as well start allowing us to delete our own posts. At least then the storytellers might delete their own shit before people invest time and effort into trying to help them sort it.

Is there a petition? Sign me up please.

The other thread has just been deleted.

bibbitybobbityyhat Fri 31-Mar-17 20:49:43

I agree too. It's getting very silly.

Sunshinenow Fri 31-Mar-17 20:53:56

Agree. Just take out any identifying posts.

It is like people are cleansing their posting history.

FiveGoMadInDorset Fri 31-Mar-17 21:02:08

MN definitely isn't what it used to be

hobnobsaremyfave Fri 31-Mar-17 21:02:08

Oh what a surprise tge other thread has gone poof hmmangry

Itaintme Fri 31-Mar-17 21:04:03

Well considering how many threads end up in the DM it's hardly surprising that posters want some control over their threads.

MrsMackenzo Fri 31-Mar-17 21:04:29

I'm pretty new to MN (joined at the time of Oliver's Army, which I was reminded of after a posting in the deleted thread) but have witnessed a lot of 'not what it used to be' type posts.

Itaintme Fri 31-Mar-17 21:06:53

I think it's perfectly ok to ask for a thread to be deleted.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine Fri 31-Mar-17 21:08:26

I think it's perfectly ok to ask for a thread to be deleted

Fine to ask, but MN should not delete without very good reason. Once you post it belongs to them.

Itaintme Fri 31-Mar-17 21:11:24

Yes but it's just a chat forum. Why does it matter if a thread gets deleted?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine Fri 31-Mar-17 21:12:55

Yes but it's just a chat forum. Why does it matter if a thread gets deleted

It lowers the quality of conversation.

bibbitybobbityyhat Fri 31-Mar-17 21:15:15

It makes the site look false and dubious.

Itaintme Fri 31-Mar-17 21:15:24

No it doesn't. If you think someone's trolling I would have thought that you wanted that persons threads deleted.

WhisperingLoudly Fri 31-Mar-17 21:17:17

And it feels like a waste of time when you respond on a thread and it's deleted.

Between the tech issues and the deletions it's hardly worth the effort

Philoslothy Fri 31-Mar-17 21:17:24

I couldn't post on the other thread as it was deleted.

I don't really care about getting threads or posts deleted but if she is genuine I really worry about those children . If she isn't genuine I worry about her impact on other posters. Some posters may think that if they act rashly that the local authority will endlessly bail them out financially. Other posters may think that there is no point going to support charities and agencies because they will be ignored. Some posters are also giving more than they should emotionally and perhaps financially. I have to admit that I was tempted to send her money or do a shop for her until my husband pointed out that she could be anyone and that I would be better of donating to a trusted charity or helping somebody I knew.

I know we should not give more than we can stand to lose either financially or emotionally but the world is not that simple.

ZackyVengeance Fri 31-Mar-17 21:20:58

What is also annoying is you cant discuss it as mn hq delete as a tat
I get annoyed that they will delete stuff at a posters request.
Even when a lot of good info has been posted.
no one posts under their rl name on here, so unless they post something proper outing it should be left.
For instance years ago i did a thread and put alink in it
By mistake i did it to my own fb page
So of course mn hq deleted it as it was outing.
But deleting whole threads as they now do, just means that people have just wasted their time helping.
