seriously, why do people report stuff? Obviously if it's defamatory or
offensive or a personal attack that upsets you then hit that button. But surely it's usually better to ignore and move on?

I report if I think someone is being a cunt or nasty or trying to generate wank fodder.

Because if stuff isn't reported it won't be deleted Confused

If something is reported that isn't delete worthy then MNHQ won't delete. I don't quite understand what your issue is?

"I report if I think someone is being a cunt or nasty or trying to generate wank fodder."

Yep. Me too. But a slightly tasteless thread title abut a real issue in the news? Why on earth report that?

I report if I feel it needs to be deleted for whatever reason

What I don't do, is announced that I've reported

that I don't get

I don't which thread you are talking about but one person's "slightly tasteless" is another person's horrifically offensive.

Are you complaining because the thread in question was deleted or the thread title was edited? Is still can't answer your OP properly because I don't know why you are asking Grin

I don't know. A thread I started has been deleted, apparently due to a large volume of complaints, the nature of which I am not aware of so I think possibly mentioning that you have reported is not a bad thing if you think that's the appropriate course of action.

I can only imagine I caused massive offence for reasons I can only attempt to guess at.

SoupDragon · 16/02/2017 13:04

If the "slightly tasteless" thread is the one I think it is, it was utterly disgusting.

Report
BertrandRussell · 16/02/2017 13:33

Must have been a different one then. Nobody could have thought the one I mean was "utterly disgusting"

I've reported when I truly believe it is a troll. You put effort into reading a thread and responding carefully to find out the person is a troll.

I don't know which thread this is about.

I report spammers a lot and any personal attacks or things I think might be trolls.

Beachedwh4le · 16/02/2017 17:54

I think sometimes the multiple reports is people saying its a troll post rather than the content maybe?

I reprt trolls or swearing at other posters

I've often wondered this. I think some people just feel more invested in MN and care about the quality control?

Report
WhyPost · 16/02/2017 19:14

I report a lot. I report the obvious stuff but I'll also report someone if they are 'simply' being nasty to another poster. I don't agnst about it though, I just report and let MNHQ deal with it as they want.
If someone is being nasty without actually making a 'personal attack' I will sometimes still report as MNHQ will still often delete.

I report because I prefer to be on sites where people are nice. I don't mind it when everyone disagrees but I can't be doing with the faux 'outrage' and nastiness. It's pathetic.

Hi everyone,
We know you're not really looking for our input on this but we just wanted to stick our noses in to say that we do appreciate the reports we get, we read them all and rely on them totally. (Even if sometimes we do think some of you could just live with having posted the same thing twice. Wink)

Report
BertrandRussell · 16/02/2017 22:46

You know, Helenmumsnet, I am interested in your input. In the thread I'm talking about, the tipping point seemed to have been the fact that there were lots of reports in a short time. So does that mean quantity not quality? I'm sure you know what I'm talking about- it was nothing that wouldn't have qppeared on The anews Quiz, or Mock the Week or any mainstream TV programme......

If I were MNHQ I'd probably just weigh up the cost of keeping a thread going and having to police it and respond to reports, vs keeping it going. Let's face it, some aren't worth bothering with. They have limited man-power; what's one less stupid AIBU thread (I don't know what thread this is about, by the way. Just speaking generally)

I agree with Soubriquet : it's odd when posters make a point of mentioning they've reported, rather than just quietly doing so.

I do "ignore and move on" quite often, yes, but surely always doing that allows certain stuff to get deemed acceptable?

I've occasionally reported:

Usually racist/ disablist/ abusive-type stuff, so blatantly offensive that it's only a matter of time before sheer numbers of MNers complaining gets it removed anyway. More than happy to add my name to them.

There have been a couple of threads/ posts, though, when I've felt unsure as to whether I'm reading something into it that's not really intended. But as they've been to do with children, I've reported them for MNHQ to look at. Would always rather err on side of safety. (And they were removed, so I guess others felt the same).

But there'll no doubt be The Perpetually Offended, hitting that report button at any & every chance they get. Wonder if MNHQ roll their eyes a lot, when X's name rocks up complaining for the 18th time that week? Wink Is there even a limit?

Report
MrsDustyBusty · 17/02/2017 10:44

I'd like to point out that the thread of mine that was deleted (and I think this is the one to which Bertrand refers) was not racist/disablist/abusive and did not refer to children.

What was the thread title? This thread is a bit meaningless without it.

I report if I'm suspicious that the OP is not genuine. I sometimes don't bother. There was a long running thread very recently that seemed like the work of a professional writer rather than a woman in distress but I didn't mention it. MN is entertainment, not just mutual assistance.

Report
BertrandRussell · 17/02/2017 11:16

I don't report often- but when I do I always say. I want people to know who and why.

But why?

If they are being deliberately goady, you've given them what they want. Attention and acknowledgement to the point it needs reporting
