New feature - @ mentions

Afternoon

As previously requested, we're very pleased to introduce a new tag function.

You will now be able to tag Mumsnetters by name on Talk threads - just type @ followed by their username, et voila! The MNer in question will get an email notification (unless they've turned the feature off). So to tag user LovelyMNer, you'd type @LovelyMNer, and so forth.

This is now available to all users on the Mumsnet site and in the Talk app. It's switched on by default, but if it's not for you, just turn it off by going to Customise Settings.

As usual, this is a beta version, so please do let us know what you think and how it works for you, and we'll feed all your thoughts back to our tech team.

Cheers and happy tagging,

MNHQ

Erm ...Xmas Blush

For those of us who don't habitually hang out in tagging territory - what is its purpose please?

So gruach has now received an email? If we don't have email settings on (not sure who would choose to, you'd be spammed all day) then what does tagging do? Wouldn't it be more useful if it automatically bolded the name? But I guess we can do that easily already

Us old hands stick in the mud luddites will be cool wid' still bolding I reckon

SoupDragon · 19/12/2016 13:22

@Gruach

The purpose is so that you don't have to scroll through 10 pages to find someone's reply to you.

Report
SoupDragon · 19/12/2016 13:24

do you get an email that just says "you've been tagged" or does it tell you what was said? I'm thinking about what happens if it's a thread you've hidden for some personal reason.

Oh! Yes, I have Gallavich - even without an upper case G!

But why would anyone want this please?

The purpose is so that you don't have to scroll through 10 pages to find someone's reply to you.

Well, you might. And you might get 15 email notifications for the same thread which would be tedious.

SoupDragon · 19/12/2016 13:27

(I don't care about the feature being introduced though, I've just turned notifications off because I don't want shed loads of spam!)

I suppose you have to type their full, real nn? For example if someone tagged me it would have to be @OrangeSquashTallGlass not @Orange? Whereas when someone responds and bolds me as Orange, I know they're talking to me.

^^

Or Binary. You couldn't tag Binary as @Binary, you'd have to use the numbers.

@SoupDragon

Test tag so you can tell us what it says.....

Soubriquet · 19/12/2016 13:27

I suppose it's a good idea if someone has read something in a thread and wanted more information. An email would help that poster see someone wants to know more whereas before they had to hope that their question was seen

Just noticed you've switched of off now.
Never mind, you'll never know 😬

Report
Gruach · 19/12/2016 13:31

Ah, ok Hellmouth - thanks.

Still, I read a thread for the thread. Not just to see who's paying attention to moi.

And I'd be scared of sarky/scornful comments I might now be alerted to which I previously would have remained unaware of.

Ho hum. Will see how it goes but yeah - I may be one of those who switches this off.

I would be willing to bet most people will just stick to bolding.

A better feature would be to have what I think are called nested boards???? Where you can directly reply to a post and it creates a new subset of posts. Like on reddit iyswim.

Or maybe just stick to the relatively uncomplicated mumsnet we have at the moment.

TanteRose · 19/12/2016 13:35

True. I do like bolding
It usually does the job

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 19/12/2016 13:36

I guess one place this could be very helpful is when people ask for advice and others know of specific mumsnetters who are knowledgeable on this so can rage them to alert them to it. Useless of you've turned off the alerts or don't check your email often. Maybe it would be better linked to the inbox rather than emails.
