MN vs. other forums ?

OK I admit I've been around the clock a few times over the years, but is it just me that thinks Mumsnet is one of the worst forums around ?

No threaded view, and no ability to edit posts spring to mind. Plus maybe the ability to ignore posters.

What do other posters who use other forums (yes, they exist) think ?

I think it could do with more moderation. There are a.lot of trolls and there does seem to be a culture where rudeness is welcomed, tolerated even.

I agree about editing and ignoring too and there are too many topics

I think the same tbh, it's very basic and would love an ignore poster option.

All the issues wrt porn pop ups/ crashing etc have really pissed me off recently.

I like the OPs post being a different colour, in long threads it helps me find updates. I dont get it on a different forum I use (horse related)

You can't edit posts for good reason. You would have everyone rewriting history.
No idea what a 'threaded view' is and 'ignore poster' has been asked for a lot but it's not going to happen. Plus with all the namechanging it would be pointless lately.

I am pretty ok with the moderation but miss the replies to reports as you have no way of knowing what's happening.

Can't compare to other parenting forums as I don't use any. I guess if you think they are better then stick with them instead?

Editing would cause massive ructions where poster may deny what they'd previously written.
Ignore poster has been requested many times.
And no we don't want to reduce MN to the lowest common denominator by introducing a bloody like button.

What does 'threaded view ' mean , please ?

It's where your reply to a post is in context, so as a thread grows, you can see who replied to what, and how the thread evolves. It works by indenting the posts in a list

regarding editing, a lot of forums allow a non-replied post to be edited. That would help reduce the need to repost an autocorrect correction

I think a like button is a good idea. Sometimes I just want to ' like' someone's post rather than post a proper reply.

I think this is best one of the ones I use.

For me the best bit is the ability to name change. I have AS and tend to massively over share. Here I can just name change to protect myself rather than feeling I have to leave for pastures new.

The one thing I'd like to see is a like/dislike button thingy. It would help me understand the world a little bit more by giving an indication of how much rubbish others think the post contains.

I don't like threaded views ,I find them annoying. We can C and P and bold if we want to reply to something specifically.

I've only been a member for about 2 years but even I've seen this being done to death.

When you say "worst" you really just mean 'lacking in all some of the most common technical functions of other forums'. Some would argue this is what makes MN the best forum. No editing? This means no going back or denying what you said, no obsessive correcting and polishing your posts, meaning that posts are more authentic and human. No threading? Linear view is very straightforward, more like a real life conversation, mentioning a poster by name or quoting relevant bits of their post in bold is our convention for replying to a specific person.

I really like the layout of MN, I find it clear, clean and easy to read. Can't bear threaded views, it seems to use acres of space to say very little.

The 2 things I find irritating on here are the poor performance in loading threads and the way the page jumps around.

I love mumsnet for its simplicity of design. I can't bear sites with loads of annoying features they just get on the way. Threaded views just mean you end up with conversations within conversations, which takes away from the focus of a originalpost i think. Editing is problematic as well in my view as while everyone trotts out corrections of typos as the reason for it, but editing would also allow people to go back and modify posts in a way that could change the meaning and be confusing when reading a thread on sequence.

I am agnostic about a like button. I can see it on chat maybe but in a lot of the forums dealing with more sensitive issues I don't think it should be turned into a competition for who gets the most likes. I also have enough issues with self esteem without some being able to dislike my posts.

I think the point of a Talk forum is to, well, talk. Not to agree with others by ticking a box. Chat would not be very Chatty would it?
