Since iOS10 hit my phone

The chat app is draining my battery like crazy. Never had this before. Has anyone else noticed it? It's literally super obvious drain when I've only got this open.

Not sure if it's since ios10 or not but it is using a lot of battery.

It's been doing this to me since before the update, something to do with the continuous updating I think. I've pretty much switched back to just reading in safari again.

Exactly the same for me since the update. Trying to remember to MN through the webpage on my phone instead.

This is happening to me. Only the Mumsnet Chat app seems to make my phone really hot and drains the battery loads quicker than it used to before the latest iOS update.

Thought it was just me. I've googled it but can't seem to find anything.

If you tap on the separate apps it gives you a break down of screen time and any background time.

FB is the worst on mine at 28% - says 35 min background, on top of on screen time.

MN is second with 20% - all screen time

Ahhh, that explains why my battery is going down so fast!

If it's others as well I will flag with H Q

Hi there YouAreNotPrepared. Thanks for flagging this up. We're going to ask Tech if there's anything that can be done to prevent the battery drain and, in the meantime, we're going to move this over to Site Stuff so if others are having similar issues they can find it easily. Thanks again!

Thank you. I've been using the app for a while but only noticed it recently. I think the app did update recently as did my phone so I'm not sure which update made it a bit funky. I now get notifications as well that are new. I will screen capture next time I see one.

Can I add, I updated to ios10 on my iPad, and use Safari to MN, and occasionally (2-3 times a day) the keyboard freezes in the bottom corners when I post, I can't get to the numbers part, or put the keyboard down. When this happens as well, if I press post, it doesn't register and just enlarges the screen.

I get this notification thingy as well. If you click it opens the app, I can't find anyway in the app or my phones notification settings to turn it off.

If the apps running all the time it's no wonder my battery is buggered. I think I'm going to have to uninstall it Sad

Youarenot, you need to switch off Location Settings for the app.

Do check if Bluetooth is on. My battery was draining rapidly after updating until I noticed that the update had automatically switched on Bluetooth. Once I turned it off the battery life went back to normal. Same thing happened to DW.

This is very useful - since the software update I'm having to charge my phone multiple times a day it's a real pain.

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback - I'll reply to as many of the above posts as possible.

Battery draining
Inthebathprobably thanks for the detail - if you tap the battery percentage, it should show the amount of time the app has been open, could you check and let me know - it would be useful to check the app is performing as expected. We are releasing some bug fixes shortly that may be causing the issue (we haven't seen the same battery-draining bug, so it's difficult to confirm).

iOS 10 does in general use more background features, so I expect batteries will not perform as well, unrelated to the Mumsnet app.

Performance of Talk App vs Talk mobile web
One of the reasons we provide an app is that the performance is more efficient than the web because data is cached and does not need to be reloaded all the time - this means the battery life should last longer than the web. However there can occasionally be bugs in the app that use unnecessary data and cause the battery to drain faster. It is my eternal challenge to improve the performance, and make the Talk app perform better - so your feedback is super helpful!

Location services
Mumsnet does not use/track/access your location at any time. If we ever did, we would explicitly ask for your permission (Apple require that every app does). The Based on your current location suggestion is not triggered by the Mumsnet app, but a suggestion made by Siri. Your phone records when you use all of your apps, and suggests those apps to you when you enter locations that you typically use those apps.

If you'd like to turn off this iOS feature, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Turn off the Siri location permission.

We'll continue to monitor this situation and fix anything dodgy we see, thanks guys!

Hi HQ, my battery is saying 72% used by Talk app over 1.7 hours today.

In comparison, facebook is 16%, from 57 mins plus 17 min in background.

Report
Hulababy · 03/10/2016 18:51

For info.

Last 24 hours
MN Talk - 11%
(33 min on screen)

My biggest one today is Mail - 32% from 18 min on screen and 1 min background.
FB is 21% from 14 min on screen and 8 min background

Last week
MN Talk - 26%
3.5 hours on screen

MN is highest.
Next is FB - 21% from 2.9 hours on screen and 1.7hr background

Youarenotprepared - do you sweep away the apps when you've finished with them? So, double click on home button - then sweep finished with apps upwards. That may help, esp for background apps.

I've been been having this problem too and have now uninstalled the app and gone back to the mobile site. It was definitely the mumsnet app causing the battery drainage...my battery is fine since deleting it.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 03/10/2016 19:05

Mine is 65%, 1.7 hours on screen.

I'm trying to remember to swipe it from the background a few times a day.

Youarenotprepared · 03/10/2016 19:09

Yeah I sweep away everything all the time. Just realised Bluetooth is on so thanks for that. The location thing is showing me other stuff now so going to turn that off. Thanks all.

ALemonyPea I get that! It only started doing it yesterday after I updated iOS (sadly - because MN are likely to fix it but Apple aren't). It's really, really annoying.

Mine has just used 23% from 39 mins on screen! The app is hammering my battery at the moment.

I'm still on iOS 8 (iphone6) as I never update if it works as the update always ends up a fuck up

Battery life still gets thrashed when using the MN app, last for ages with everything else, seems to me to be an app problem, I tend to just limit use so my phone doesn't go flat
