Banning the term "cis"

OlennasWimple · 06/07/2016 23:36

Apologies if this had already been done, but can MNHQ consider banning the term "cis", given how horrifically offensive so many users of MN find it?

I don't think I need to set out the background and reasoning to this request (but can do so if it would help!)

That's ridiculous. It's not used to piss you off, it's used only in context to describe someone assigned to the gender they identify with because writing cis is quicker.

Being offended by cis is like demanding straight pride day imo.

I'm with AllTheFluffyAnimals. I'm genuinely puzzled about why people find offence in this.

Agree, ridiculous label for women we are better than labels we dont need abloodynother one

Seriously, the only reason it exists is so we're not stuck having to say 'trans people and not-trans people'. Nobody much needed a word for straight/heterosexual until there was more awareness and discussion of sexuality. Same thing here.

I'd be happy to see it not used on MN.

I had never heard of it before Mumsnet and think it's totally odd. I have no issues with anyone being anything or living in any way, quite happy for anyone to use the ladies or the men's toilets who think they should be there and wear and sleep with whoever the fuck they want, but I do just think of myself as a woman cos I was born with a vagina and am fine with that. Can't say whether in my head I feel like a woman because I've never been a man so wouldn't know the difference.

I'm not happy that a perfectly good "man" and "woman" that has worked well for thousands of years is now being redefined because of a very vocal minority.
I am a woman, I will not ever refer to myself as cis. Silly, made up word that it is.
There are already ways to define trans people, why should those of us who aren't trans change our definition?

If we are banning the term 'cis' please can we also ban transphobia. I see a lot of it around here.

Report
PortiaCastis · 06/07/2016 23:48

I don't want to be referred to as cis. I strongly dislike the word.

Report
RJnomore1 · 06/07/2016 23:48

What's up with woman or man? Why the need for a prefix?

Report
DonkeyOaty · 06/07/2016 23:48

I don't like it and would entreat HQ to discourage use of cis.

There is a perfectly good word already in existence. Woman.

But you don't need to say trans not trans because there is no need for the word not. A woman is a woman it needs no further words added to make it clearer.
How come everyone that supports it is so keen on not offending trans people but are happy to use what is a highly offensive term to a lot of people. I'm for a ban.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2016 23:49

I absolutely do not want to be referred to as cis and I'd report anyone calling me a cis-woman for deletion.

No one should redefine women as cis-women just because trans women exist.

"It's not used to piss you off, it's used only in context to describe someone assigned to the gender they identify with because writing cis is quicker."

I'm not trans but I also don't "identify with" the feminine gender.

Yes, it actually is offensive for you to assume that if we don't think we are men, we must love the societal delusion called gender, which says women must all love pink and sparkly shit, gossip, cry easily, love makeup and dresses etc.

Obvs this thread will turn into une fight de bun as the French don't say. Sigh.

No need for a prefix, woman is adequate. Who made up cis anyway?

Report
mineallmine · 06/07/2016 23:52

I would love to see the word banned. I am a woman, no more, no less. I don't need to redefine myself.
