What is the criteria for something to appear in trending?

I've been in threads with hundreds of replies over a short period which don't appear but the "Guest post" about albinism is featured although there have been two posts on it all day.

I'm not objecting to it being featured btw, just curious as to how the items end up in there - I'd presumed it was either an automatic thing or that a member of staff was watching where the posts were being made and bumped the topic into trending.

Maybe "featured posts" would be a more accurate description?

Trending is most clicked on rather than most posted on.

I used to be very opposed to Trending, but I have seen the light when I found the bog frock thread that way .
