Trans people being allowed to compete against women in the Olympics

OhShutUpThomas · 24/01/2016 09:37

The Olympics are now allowing men who have taken hormones for 12 months compete against women.

It is NOT transphobic to say that this is grossly unfair and a huge violation of women's rights.

Women who have trained all their lives cannot be expected to compete against people with male bodies and who will be allowed roughly 4 times the normal female testosterone levels.

It's not on. We can't stand for it.

Please get behind this mumsnet. Someone needs to take a stand.

It's NOT transphobic to state that this is unfair. It really isn't.

This isn't equality. This is disadvantaging women.

We ALL need to stand up against it.

It's ridiculous.

Are there any sports where women are routinely better than men and where women who have become men might benefit? I doubt it.

Yes I would like MN to take a stand against this appallingly unfair suggestion / plan.

I've genuinely been wracking my brains Leigh, but nothing comes to mind. It could well be literally 100% one-way advantage.

I'm in
I would like to see more discussion generally about the erosion of womens rights as trans rights are prioritised
This seems to be ignored by all the main political parties and even by the chocolate teapot known as the WEP

Synchronised swimming? though that's not really a sport

What a complete insult to women athletes and all women.

This is awful.
In the other thread there's a post outlining why men are at an advantage athletically because of their anatomy. Hormone treatment presumably won't change the person's basic male anatomy and won't add internal female organs.

I would love to see MN getting behind this issue.

It significantly changes muscle mass, but not skeletal structure, according to my late night googling yesterday.

Another one who would like MN to get behind this.

I am confused by this.
Basic biology shows XY would have a higher muscle mass...... And let fat - does taking 12 months of hormones change this? Surely a sports scientist would have been consulted?
Not an expert but someone around here should be able to clarify!

Oh, I think the post highlighted the differences in the pelvis, as in women's there are internal sex organs which men don't have.
It also mention longer tendons which made some difference to muscles which also give an advantage.

We really need one group to stand up for women's since the WEP and the fawcett society won't. MN stand a chance of having a voice to point out that men aren't women and there are serious implications of the current trend for saying "woman" is a feeling, not a biological lived reality.

This was the post:

but there having been situations in various sports already where pre-op transwomen have been allowed to compete as female. And they are basically men - tall, with deep set tendons that give them better strength when they are at full stretch and accommodate larger muscles. Pelvis better constructed for running because of not having to take a female reproductive system into account. So so many advantages, which are in no way wiped out by taking hormones for a year.

Hope it's ok to repost it here. Happy to report if it's bad form.

Completely agree but MN won't get behind this. It won't be seen as PC.
