The great emoji debate

Afternoon everyone,

So: emojis. We've had a few questions about these over the last few days. Some of you love them and some of you loathe them. The truth of the matter is that they came into being as a side-effect of a technical fix that we did; we didn't set out to introduce them (and in fact, didn't expect you to discover them quite as quickly as you did Grin). On the question of whether they stay or whether they go, it's really up to you lot. We can get rid of them again; equally, if you like having them, we're happy for them to stay. Over to you ...

I don't mind them in posts. They are annoying in thread titles.

I think they're fine although I wouldn't miss them if they went away again.

I love them too, the more the better. Xmas Smile

I don't particularly like them, and would happily see them go.

But don't mind if they stay by popular acclaim.

But please, please, please, NEVER in thread titles.

It really mucks up active convos if you're on a device that doesn't read them.

I don't mind them in posts, thread titles are a smite irritating but I'll get over it.

I like them. Not in titles though.

Agree with Brenda though that we need a limited editing option.

Get rid of them. Not all devices "see" emojis in the same way, so they may not display/get an error box.

At the moment they also seem to be being displayed at too large a size, but this may be a different glitch.

Furthermore, MN has always been a site where you can be assured of articulate conversation, not txt spk all over the place. Emojis undermines this, and is the start of the slippery slope to sparkly tickers...

I'm not a massive fan but not hugely anti either.

It'd seem like a massive policy flip if they are allowed to stay though , most inconsistent.

There's been a lot of campaigning for new emoticons over the years and the answer had generally been no. For example, people were desperate bit a vomiting emoticon for ages (goodness knows why) but it's wasn't allowed 'cause it might upset the emetephobes.

Yy to slippery slope / dumbing down / tickers. It's true. Hadn't thought of that.

Get rid!

the only emoji we need is this one FFS

I think the limited emojis is something that attracts me to MN. Not a fan of it and it stops me reading it when pretending to work. So, it's a no from me.

Don't like them at all. I come to to MN to get away from emojis. I like having just the old fashioned ones. Angry

I don't mind them but hate when they're over used, posters who used 12 just for the hell of it. I also dislike them in the actual thread titles. If they start dancing around posts a la netmums though I may have to unsubscribe.

I don't like them. I like the MN emoticons, and seeing little cartoon emojis makes it feel like fucking facebook.

I don't like them, although I have used them 😳

I bloody love them tbh. Though it isn't very MN! The trouble is they keep changing from teeny black spiders that are indistinguishable from one another, to large and florid ones, and I don't know what's going on.

I can't use them - on a desktop - but they are very pretty.

Btw Brenda - your posts wouldn't be half as much fun if we had an editing facility Xmas Grin

They don't work for me on the app. I can see them when other people post them but the emoji keyboard doesn't appear when I type.

I think the original mumsnet set of emojis are enough, everyone knows what they mean and as far as I understand they all show up the same regardless of what kind of devise is being used.

If someone uses 🌹 instead of Flowers or ☕️ instead of Brew on here it kind of feels all wrong.

Stasie · 07/12/2015 16:10

I would however very much value the facility to delete ones own posts. For ever. Or for you guys to just delete all posting history (except classics maybe?) after a set period of time, perhaps a year or two?

It would limit the options for RL stalkers, cut the paranoia dramatically when something goes tits up (not that unusual, ahem) and just free up space for a nice console table with a pot plant on it.

Report
Stasie · 07/12/2015 16:12

and if I'm going to get the black spiders most of the time, please just get rid. It's horrid.

Colourful ones are delightful. Smile
