And the first ad I saw was this prostrate woman in bondage gear wtaf? Is this a mistake, and is there a way to report it, or is this normal for mumsnet?

So I turned off my adblocker to give MN a few microquid

I thought the picture ads like that were things that you had been googling Wink

RepeatAdNauseum · 20/06/2015 17:32

Yeah, those ads are influenced by your search terms - mine are almost always things I've looked at on ASOS.

If there's nothing in your cookies that Google could construe as being sexual, it's probably worth doing a full malware scan.

Someone in your house has been googling this stuff Grin

I get ads for sandals, sofa's and wine Grin

I don't think so! I mean I just went and looked in my history and it is like

Peter Serafinowicz or Serafinowich
The Foundling Museum
Janice Battersby haircut
data driven web applications google drive spreadsheet backend
Soko Youtube I'll keel er

and then just spreadsheets, like, days and days of spreadsheets. No one else uses this computer or has the password.

It's a car ad now.

I'd still run a malware scan, in that case.

Google effectively "rents" the space from Mumsnet, and then matches it to things that your internet history suggests you'll be interested in. So things you've looked at on websites, similar items, etc. We could get 300 people to all load the same Mumsnet page, with the same rented space, but all see completely different things.

If you haven't looked up anything that Google could be classifying as "in common" with that ad - so something to do with robots, I'd guess, because that's not a human woman - or porn, I'd make sure that there is no malware/spyware/viruses that are using your computer.

My adverts are mainly furniture, days out, Asos, make up etc...

What have you been googling? Grin

Nah, it's fine, Repeat. I mean, I am on a network run by a pentester so there's no malware threat barring me actively pissing off ma'colleagues. Thanks though. Flowers

I was under the impression MN set some content parameters on the ads they displayed but if you're saying not I'm happy to just block all ads here as I don't want to see that kind of content.

First, IDK! I can only conclude my idle googling of "Beauty and Misogyny pdf" (a feminist book mentioned ona thread in Chat) has spawned unhappy fruit!

I was wondering what the ad is actually for.

Is it connected to Humans? Because if so searching actors might be enough to place it.

Also, I was wondering if this sort of ad finder responds to pages viewed in private browsing, or on linked devices?

It was him that did the voice for Darth Maul and it is definitely spelled cz, everyone, not ch, by the way. Just in case you are all too scared to google now. It's definitely spelled cz! Grin

Edith - Yes to linked devices, theoretically no to private browsing because that shouldn't leave any cookies for the ad to "use".

Lolo - Mumsnet can report it as inappropriate so it won't get shown on the site again. Hopefully they'll see this!

I read your list as the Fondling Museum and thought no wonder you get ad's like that Grin

And oh, I could report this thread I suppose? I did look in Contact us but I didn't see, you know... it wasn't clear to me that that was the way to go. (Also there's no point attaching screenshots to emails to companies as they are almost always stripped out.)

There was a spate of these about a year or so ago so hopefully MNHQ will see this thread and take action - I don't think it's anything to do with your browsing history, just someone trying to sneak in a (lucrative) naughty.

I too think it is linked to the C4 series "Humans' about human like robots. The 'bondage gear' looks like joints in an articulated doll to me.
They were doing viral advertising for it.

I've never been more pleased that my ad is for a jar of Hellmann's. In fact I might buy a jar just to say thank you for saving me from that abomination.

Which Adblocker are people using? I turned mine off because the performance in Chrome was shocking (mind you, by and large the performance of Chrome just is shocking).

UBlock Origin is the best for Chrome IMO. Though I have switched to Firefox for my primary as Chrome is so slow. (And getting increasingly dodge.)

x-post, Baby Grin We've clearly been reading the same thread.

I was anxious to know if I was being slandered outrageously! I concluded I would be quite happy looking like Janice Battersby were I aged 57. (She just looks like a normal woman with short hair to me.)

Hi Lolo,

Sorry we're a bit late to the party - it's been One Of Those Weekends on the site and everything's taking a bit longer than usual to sort.

As for your screenshot, that's an ad and a half! Blush

We'll get our Tech team to check it out and will report back in the morning.
