If it's to do with mental health MN will move it to mental health so permanently there? Doesn't make sense to me the point of chat and perhaps chat should make it clear that 'topics are subject to be moved thus eventually permanent despite the 90 day removal rule" kinda puts people off posting/starting sensitive threads or maybe that's just me...

Just read a thread here being moved by Dawn @ MN to mental health!

30 days might be a better place to post than _chat.

I'm sure it was brought in for more serious subjects.

Maybe the OP asked for it to be moved?

Seems really unfair to move without OP's permission if they want it gone after 90 days

True - threads should only be moved at the OP's request. Maybe the OP requested it?

No op didn't in fact she thought she had done something wrong!

I don't understand how moving the thread to mental health would help op as there is more traffic on chat so more support than stuck in a topic op did not choose... Like I said maybe it's just me confused!

This is what MN wrote on the thread...
We'll be moving this thread over to our Mental Health topic shortly -this is part of the new protocol we've been advised to follow.

There's been a rash of trolls posting lately, including at least one suicide thread. Not for one moment saying anything about that OP, but after one particularly bad thread I think MNHQ may have put some protocols in place.

MH is the appropriate board, and MNHQ have a duty to all posters, not just the OP.

It's worth stating in the opening post that you have posted in chat because you want it to go pfft (and consider using a 30 day topic rather than 'chat')

MNHQ revised policy on suicide threads recently (using advice from Mind and the Samaritans IIRC) and that might override all else. OP would still be able to ask for deletion (as originally in a self-extinguishing topic) and it would IMO be shitty if MNHQ did not do so.

There was a thread recently about whether AIBU should also be limited to 90 days, and I pointed out then that it could be quite troubling for posters who had specifically posted something in the knowledge that it would disappear soon, but then the thread gets moved somewhere permanent. In that case I was talking about being moved to classics, but the principle is the same for any permanent topic. The answer from MNHQ was that if that happened posters should contact them to get the post removed, and they'd be happy to do so. That might be an option for the op.

Hi Cornonthecob,

We're happy to explain things.

We've recently met with representatives from Mind and the Samaritans to discuss the issue of threads where the OP is feeling suicidal. You can see the whole thread here.

As a result of these discussions, we have a new set of guidelines in place for any such threads - one of which is that we're obliged to move the thread over to our Mental Health topic. We do always inform the OP before moving it, and, just for the record, if the thread was started in Chat it will still auto-delete after 90 days.

We would of course delete such a thread at the OP's request if they wanted it to disappear sooner.

Hope that clears things up. Fwiw, we haven't actually moved the thread in question over yet because we can see the OP is receiving a good deal of advice and support where it is, but we will have to before the day's out.

We may also have to move this thread over to Site Stuff... Smile
