Campaign for girls to be able to wear trousers in schools.

I'm sure this is not the right place, but in response to fisharefriendsnotfood's ongoing thread, where do I post to support her in her idea of trying to get a mumsnet campaign going?

Anyway, I second her! Please can you point me in the right direction.

Is a campaign needed at a national level though?
Most state schools allow trousers for girls as a choice, so that school is probably something of an anomaly. A local campaign involving the newspaper might be more effective.

That's sort of the point Goblin and Anyone..it sort of isn't enough for most girls in state schools to be allowed to wear trousers. all girls , should have the right to wear school trousers!

Therefore, it would probably be better if parents complained to the school in question and to the local authority.

I really don't think the problem is common enough to warrant a campaign.

None of the secondary schools where I live allow girls to wear trousers. Primaries do though.

Was that question to me misfit? If so then no not a wind up. I think girls can look nice in trousers but as a school uniform skirts look smarter.

DD was allowed to wear trousers but not shorts, we will be in deep shit of they make her wear a skit in secondary schook as that is never going to happen. And yes skirts look smarter but when you have a DD who refuses to wear one what do you do?

Surely this is for individual schools to decide. If enough of their pupils and parents want trousers they will go along with them but I think this is a waste of time and effort on something so trivial

It is not trivial if you are the DD involved, but I agree it's a local problem. Nationally most mixed state schools do allow trousers.

The two issues I'd like raised are VAT on logo'd items

And shoes, why shouldn't DCs wear smart black trainers or flat ankle boots to school. The expense, stress and utter frustration finding school shoes DD1 finds comfortable is something I really could have done without.

I agree with you op. This kind of outdated sexism has no place in 2014.

Allowing all girls the right to wear trousers will not do the following:

1. Look less smart because smart trousers look smart on girls or boys.
   

1. Stop girls wearing pinafores or skirts if they so choose.
   

1. Stop girls looking feminine because girls look like girls regardless of whether their legs are covered with trousers or partially covered with a skirt. what a load of old bollocks that sentiment is
   

Until such time as all girls at all schools have equal rights to wear trousers which are a common and acceptable item of clothing in this country then yes, there needs to be some sort of national response.

The first person to say "it's traditional" on this thread needs shooting. It is traditional to be homophobic or racist in parts of the UK but that does not make it ok. "Traditional" is a bullshit reason.

I know a primary where dresses are banned in case the girls show their knickers. That made me sad too.

Oh, I completely agree that girls should be free to wear school uniform trousers as a choice of uniform, but unless it becomes national law, some schools will still bow to pressure from parents and other groups of individuals who have strong opinions on matters such as uniform.
I'd definitely like to see such outdated sexist practices ended.
It's a catholic school, obviously a conservative one as many others have trousers as an option. She's going to be battling many of the parents as well as the school. I wonder if she's taken it to the Diocese, or asked for support from other catholic schools in the same area.
