Sliders on Mumsnet

Hello everyone,

For a while we've realised that not everyone is aware of all of the different things happening across Mumsnet including webchats, book clubs and much more.

Over the next few weeks you may see little sliders appearing from the bottom right announcing upcoming events or things we think you might find interesting. We're trying out ways to let everyone know what's going on and this is part of the experiment.

If you close the slider by clicking on the 'X' then you won't be shown it again and they'll only be shown in select parts of the site.

As ever any feedback you have is always welcome so keep an eye out for them and let us know what you think!

So when are they starting?

cozietoesie Fri 06-Jun-14 19:35:37

Got one this afternoon. It was just as well that I'd read Jessica's post or I'd have been yelling about unwanted pop-ups!

ouryve Thu 12-Jun-14 12:47:40

Was just about to grumble about this one, until I realised that it actually went away when I told it to get lost.

VitoCorleone Thu 12-Jun-14 12:48:25

Just seen my first one. God i hate them slider things

AMumInScotland Thu 12-Jun-14 14:41:02

Thank you. You've given me the final impetus I needed to go back into Customise and get rid of your recent additions to the site! I know you want to keep adding features, but it's getting horribly cluttered. I suppose you have to default new features to 'On' rather than 'Off' so that people can see them, but it's getting so things flicker all over the place if you don't hide them all.

Minnieisthedevilmouse Thu 12-Jun-14 14:43:16

Fucking irritating. There's a reason I'm not clicking on my local, it's poo. I do check it every so often. Damn thing slides in, ruins what I'm reading and won't bog off til I click the button. Wrong move and it opens it.

It's right given me RAGE!!!

BertieBotts Thu 12-Jun-14 14:47:26

I don't mind this, as long as it's occasional and it definitely goes away for good when clicked.

So far so good. I don't know that it's adding anything but it's not bothering me at the moment.

The miscarriage one was NOT welcomed today

The miscarriage one was NOT welcomed today

We're so sorry that the sliders have upset you, that really was the last thing we intended flowers

We understand that miscarriage is a tremendously emotive subject. We are promoting our campaign heavily because of feedback from Mumsnetters who have been through the same, and we feel that they deserve better miscarriage care.

Again, we are so sorry for any upset caused by this. Much love MNHQ flowers

Morethanalittlebitconfused Mon 16-Jun-14 18:46:54

Thanks for the apology.

I agree that the miscarriage slider is unwelcome and insensitive, particularly as every time I click the x button on the mobile site it doesn't close it. It's really put me off being here today.

"If you close the slider by clicking on the 'X' then you won't be shown it again and they'll only be shown in select parts of the site."

I closed it yesterday and assumed from what was said that was it, popped up again today.

FruVikingessOla Tue 17-Jun-14 08:49:53

It's popped up 4 times this morning, even though I keep clicking the cross it's just reappeared again hmm

JessicaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 17-Jun-14 10:19:03

Hello, clicking the cross should stop you seeing it and other sliders. We'll ask tech to take a look and see what's happening there.
Thank you for letting us know

JessicaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 17-Jun-14 10:57:59

Hello again, we're really sorry some of you are having trouble with the sliders.

We're struggling to replicate the problem so please bear with us.

Would you mind telling us how you're accessing Mumsnet? Android, iPhone etc?

Thank you

JessicaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 17-Jun-14 11:25:37

Can you confirm you're not using incognito to access mumsnet, or clearing the cookies, or using a different browser each time?

Thank you

cozietoesie Tue 17-Jun-14 11:30:40

I've not seen one since that first - I forget what I did with it but maybe I clicked on the 'x'. (And I stay on FF for MN and clear cookies at least daily.)

Naoko Tue 17-Jun-14 12:54:11

When you close the slider it seems to remember it for the session if you're lucky (and not every time at that); if you come back later in the day you'll get it again and obviously if you change devices all bets are off because you're I'm assuming you're relying on a device-side cookie to store that it's been dismissed rather than anything stored serverside.

It strikes me that this is not ideal, from a userfriendliness perspective. I appreciate that it's the only way to do it that won't make the server hamsters cry desparate tears and appeal to the RSPCA, but especially if you're going to use the sliders for an emotive topic like miscarriage, you're going to upset a lot of users. The sliders are a minor irritation if you have to close them once, very annoying if they won't go away, and very upsetting if they're about something triggering for you and they won't go away.

spiritofthetime Tue 17-Jun-14 12:54:12

Nope, usually access by phone, mobile site. Staying logged in. Keeps popping back up straight away. Please get rid of it...

JessicaMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 17-Jun-14 13:55:31

Hi spiritofthetime we're really sorry this is happening for you, can you let us know what phone you are using? We can't get this to happen for us and we're really keen to get it fixed.

Naoko We do understand and completely agree it is not ideal. We thought long and hard about how and where sliders should be shown and they should go away when dismissed and not bother anyone again.

We also recognise that the miscarriage care campaign is really important to people and we do want to promote it. Not at the expense of upsetting people though so we've taken the slider off chat for now.

We are working really hard to try and identify the problem so this doesn't happen again, any more information you can give us to help diagnose any issue would be great thank you.

Morethanalittlebitconfused Tue 17-Jun-14 14:08:39

I access via my iphone and had a slider this morning.

I wonder if it's a case of they reset after 24 hours?

FruVikingessOla Tue 17-Jun-14 17:11:56

JessicaMumsnet. I'm just trying to remember now. Maybe I was lurking (i.e. not logged in) this morning when the slider kept popping up.

So, perhaps after I'd logged in and clicked close, that was when it went? Sorry - I really can't remember.

I always use the same device though (an iMac using Firefox).

KarlWrenbury Tue 17-Jun-14 17:12:59

i have no sliders

cozietoesie Tue 17-Jun-14 22:01:09

Ah - just got one on Credit Crunch.

I think that the problem, Jessica, is that they're anonymous - if I hadn't read about them here, I'd have assumed they were the usual rotten pop-ups. If you have to have them (which is a whole other question) you at least need to make them 'MN official' by eg giving them a logo identifier. I'll leave aside for now the issue of people copying that logo to sneak pop ups in.
