Mumsnet Local – Do you want to be an Editor for your area?

EmmaMumsnet · 06/02/2014 16:11

January is over so it might be time to poke your nose out and try something new.

Mumsnet Local was revamped last year and we have 180+ local sites across the UK. We aim to have up-to-date info on what's happening where you are, like lots of great ideas for activities to amuse the kids in Half Term. Please do have a look and sign-up to your local site. Where we already have Local Editors, we are now sending out monthly newsletters full of great suggestions of things to do, exclusive local offers for Mumsnetters and lots else besides.

We need your help to make this as good as it can be Thanks Cake

Please pop over and upload a listing, review a local service or have a chat to folks in your local area. Or, if you have more time and are looking to make a little money, you could take on a local site as a Mumsnet Local Editor?

Mumsnet Local Editors manage their Mumsnet Local site, keeping it clean, tidy and up-to-date. They write newsletters and work with local ambassadors (voluntary) to hold meet-ups locally.

Local Editors can make money by contacting businesses local to them and asking them to advertise on their local sites. If you become a Local Editor, you will keep the revenue from the local advertising and offers that you book.

If this sounds of interest to you, then please do send us an email on [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field. It helps if you tell us a bit about yourself in the email.

Local is still in its infancy but it's growing all of the time: In the last year we have seen some local editors who have been working hard to build local contacts and communities really starting to see dividends, with several seeing monthly earnings topping £1,000. It is slow and steady but the potential is great for the right people.

We very much look forward to hearing from you if you are interested or have any questions.

Happy New Year

MNHQ

PS, we are still processing emails from the last recruitment thread, as we've been spring cleaning our set-up process, so don't worry, you will hear from us in the next few days. Grin

You might want to stick Leicestershire up there too - still looking for help with this area!

Nottingham already has a Local Editor who's just started recently, but Nottinghamshire is still free… Do send us an email if you're interested.

What sort of time commitment does it require?

I could do with some extra £ and something to put on my CV Confused but only have a few hours where dd is at playgroup.

To make a real go of it, we have found that two days per week works well, particularly to start with, when LEs are setting everything up. Of course, hours are completely flexible across the week and up to the individual editor.

When you say that the editors keep the local site tidy, do you need to know how to write HTML? Contacting local businesses is one thing, I've never written any web pages so not sure how much technical knowledge I'd need?

I would really love to see a full list of areas - some seem quite specific and others downright bizarre. and fwiw the town I live in is not on any list I've ever seen, despite there being a good number of mners here. Hence I would like to see how areas are divided and where boundaries are.
TIA

Hi Mrs B
We have someone potentially interested in Herefordshire, but if you email us, we'll be in touch if they decide against.

They all fall in Surrey, which is already managed by a Local Editor

Emma,

I have messaged on these threads before, re local ambassador. I volunteered originally, got accepted then never heard anything. I have chased it up several times but nothing doing. :(

I am beginning to think you hate me and don't want me! Grin :(

Have you thought about having any Local Editors for Ireland? There are rather a lot of us over here and a Dublin editor at least would be very useful (and I would be interested...;) )

Hi Arion

I'm the Kent Local Ed, and you don't need to know any programming language to look after the sites - so it's really straightforward!

Hth Smile
