Please could you keep a look out for Carpe's message to you about some concerns a group of us have due to contact we have had from potentially malicious sources away from MN but absolutely directly linked to a recent discussion on here relating to someone in the public eye.

We are concerned that particular MNers seem to have been targeted 'electronically' directly in relation to this discussion and wanted to make sure that MN in general is aware and is protected/ is able to protect others how also contributed to that discussion from being targeted in a similar way.

many thanks

Can you give any more details of how you are being targeted so that the less tech savvy can be made more aware?

Just finished a blog post about what happened, and my subsequant

<headless chicken mode>

with extra added

<twilight zone music>

....until I discovered that ... it's just what twitter does.

Tiwtter is mean and horrible. And complicated. And infested. I have been reliably informed. It does strange things and freaks out the Virgins

I knew I should have just stayed on MN.

If you do go there, tred carefully, stay awake security wise and check put any new followers properly, blocking and reporting if suspect. Become aqauinted with the flower/wheel thingie and learn how to fiddle with it. But not from me cos I had to be hand held throughout operstion clean up.

Personally I'd advice sticking to MN. That new social media.. is HARD ! and EKK!y

MNHQ please never to change anything here. Ever.

I definitely dont regret deleting my twitter account now! smile

Alwayscheerful Wed 08-Jan-14 12:03:04

Is the flower/ wheel thingie on twitter?

CarpeVinum Wed 08-Jan-14 12:16:01

Yes, it's a settings wheel. If you get a suspect looking follower, all spammy, you can go to their profile, mthen use the wheel to block and report.

We found that when all of us blocked and reported twitter squished the nasty spammy bot following us. So worth letting the other people being followed know that they have a parasite? attached to them.

RebeccaMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 08-Jan-14 16:40:03

All received - apologies for taking so long to get back.
Carpe, we will reply asap.

CarpeVinum Wed 08-Jan-14 16:54:40

.. with special MNHQ security blanket for me to snuggle when feeling paranoid and got at ? As attachement ?

Why you don't have one of them in the MN merchandize shop ai'll never know!

CarpeVinum Wed 08-Jan-14 16:59:39

It's not going to be a shouty "You are on thin ice you are young lady!" email is it ?

I am feeling delicart.

We have clearly rattled some cages somewhere as from they way it has been done there hasn't even been an attempt to hide that a very defined group of us have been targeted. Whoever it was that did it either they wanted us to know (in an attempt to intimidate us perhaps?) or they are absolutely shite at covering their tracks.

We figured out we were quite possibly being targeted deliberately because we all now know each other and have been quite vocal about the subject being discussed. To be clear I don't think any of us are worried about the security on mumsnet for other posters (although fab if MNHQ can assure us of that!) but we are concerned that we have been targeted because of a discussion ON mumsnet and that potentially they may turn attentions on to Mumsnet next having failed to intimidate us in other ways.

I'm sure all will be fine but we wanted to draw it to MNHQ attention just in case.

Oh dear, I seem to have missed rather a lot.
Doubly glad now I did not venture on Twatter <coward>

I hope everybody is ok thanks

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 08:44:33

We're fine Pacific

The intent (possibly due to technical limitations of the perp) appears to have been to distract and spook rather than create actual device/identity harm.

Believe MNHQ servers safe from jiggerypokery on that basis. But at the time...<headless chicken mode> incident at my house grin

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 08:47:15

I have tweeted since. Gingerly.

iPad has not exploded.

I still intend to give up twitter 50 seconds after all this is done and dusted.

PacificDogwood Thu 09-Jan-14 08:48:41

Oh good, you sound you usual cheerful self grin

I've still not had any responses btw - I think I'll stop holding my breath for any <exhales>

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 08:53:57

We aren't going to get any love. But I think the response to the emails was to call YouKnowWho and I think that may have been one element that provoked his blogpost. Which was our biggest break yet, cos it basically gave the press the horses' mouth confirmation needed to publish.

Now, there are some other things in prep, like the petitions etc. And of course the wheels of justice are turning. slowly. But turning. So may be good news from that end in the next 2-6 weeks.

Plus, there is a site, electionpredictions or something like that, probably all data was collected before this happened here, but none the less it predicts he will lose his seat by a hefty margin. And I do mean hefty.

I'll go see if I can find it, and will plonk it on the DM thread.

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 11:20:11

And just to demo how cherry an unpermenatly spooked I am....

ParsingFancy Thu 09-Jan-14 11:26:09

Carpe, just going to PM you (and don't want you to be scared of your inbox).

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 11:27:26

cheery, not cherry.

Am not feeling fruity. Too fecking cold.

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 11:28:01

Have to admit, approach DMs with extreme caution now.

ParsingFancy Thu 09-Jan-14 11:42:20

It's just trivial stuff, and didn't need to take up thread.

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 12:10:33

PacificDogwood Thu 09-Jan-14 12:12:53

I happen to disagree, Parsing.
You may not be familiar with the background of these concerns, but they are quite valid.

ParsingFancy Thu 09-Jan-14 12:18:54

Nooo, PD, the stuff I PM'd Carpe with is trivial.

CarpeVinum Thu 09-Jan-14 12:21:26

It's ok Pacific she's talking about the contents of the PM she sent me.

Which were actually pretty cool and groovey.
