Is it time to start paying for MN membership?

In the wake of everything that happened last night, I have been trying to think of ways to keep the goady fuckers and MRAs from repeatedly rejoining MN after being banned, just so that they can cause trouble and upset, particularly on boards like Relationships and Feminism.

If we were paying even a fairly nominal amount - say a tenner - per year for our MN membership, I don't think that is an amount that would put off people who wanted to join the site for the right reasons, but it would mean that joining, being a goady fucker, getting banned and then rejoining to cause more trouble, multiple times would get very expensive very quickly - and this might put off the trolls and goady fuckers.

Or are there other ways that we can think of that MNHQ can keep the goady fuckers off the site? Could they change the rules to say that joining just to goad people on sensitive boards is a banning offence?

I'd pay that. I have to say I have Feminism and Relationship topics hidden though.

well i'm new here, this is my first post in fact : )

I think that instead of a pay per subscription how about the validate you as being real by taking a £1 payment from your debit card / paypal and then refunding it straight back. they could then monitor the paypal accounts or debit cards being used and not allow the same ones to be used twice?

I think paypal do this to validate your account anyway.

or something equally simple, provide a phone number and have a special code either TXT to you or voicemailed to you, that code would be a validation code that you have to enter onto the site the first time you register, this would give MN a nice log of phone numbers next to each account... any trouble, they have a phone number they can use and all the info that would allow access to.

just two thoughts : )

also, hi : ) Waves

So what other options are there for MNHQ to make the site safe from the MRAs and goady fuckers? Something has to be done, surely?

There should be fines for being an arse. Definitely.

Even worse idea Pink.

And welcome.

No. I have had lots of useful advice from here over the years and I wouldn't have registered if it meant paying or giving financial details.

I wouldn't support this.

But then again, having been accused of being an MRA myself I will never find the cries of 'MRA' to be sufficiently credible to be any basis for change of policy.

The site has pretty much died, well it gets used occasionally by a handful of posters.

They already do it, but they need your (as in the posters, not you specifically) help. Report. Report. Report.

I would pay a nominal subscription if introduced as I like it here, but it would anger a lot of people and MN would lose members because of it.

this would give MN a nice log of phone numbers next to each account... any trouble, they have a phone number they can use and all the info that would allow access to

I think, but I may be wrong, that the Data Protection Act might rule out using personal info in this way!

DH is on a forum that charges a normal fee to join. He thinks it's a great idea as it stops trolls dead at the front door.

No.

Some people who post are in desperate financial situations, it would make MN only for those who could afford it.

people need to get perspective.

The answer doesn't lie with mn hq it lies with individuals. If people didn't rise to trolls (and bearing in mind that goading is very subjective) then there would be no reason to troll.

It's very simple, yet people don't want to be personally responsible for acting, they'd rather make it hq's responsibility.

And who would be happy to give their phone number to mn hq? I sure as hell wouldn't, before you know it they'd be selling numbers to 3rd parties to generate more revenue - no thanks.

Did there not used to be a £5.00 registration fee. Think it got you into local site area ??? Or have I been having funny dreams?

How about signing up with a few details then? Name/address/phone number?

Also ideas for the 'no' pile I've seen be shit

Not allowing posts for a day after registering
Pre-moderation of new posters posts until such a time they are deemed reasonable

Reporting and not responding to trolls and goading by regular users is the key.

Goading is too broad a description IMO.

I had a strange incident last week where it appeared I was goading I think. but I wasn't.

I don't think I would pay currently with all these companies sponsoring stuff and paying MNHQ.

Report
gamerchick · 24/10/2013 10:28

I don't think it's needed IMO. Less reacting, more reporting and maybe some handpicked volunteers/regular users with minimal buttons to take some strain off the admins might help.
