Site stuff

Is this really the sort of advertising that you want?

I've screen captured a strap advert that keeps following me around the site..
It's at the top of my profile.

Is this really the sort of thing you want on your site?

That's really bizarre Ruby!

I think they are google ads aren't they? So they will be specific to you.

not that someone really is spying on you :o

All I've got is an ad for "auto-enrolment middleware". I have no idea what that even is.

Morning, RubyGates. We'll take a look into this.

Adblock, people.
It's changed my life, I tell you.

I have one on the side column for www. happybirthday. com
Which features a "funny poledance" card, with a rather large-chested woman leering at me Hmm

Not impressed!

Hi Avril
Thanks for that - we'll get onto it forthwith.

I came here to mention the same ad. It looks really dodgy if you ask me, and not at all what you'd expect from mumsnet.

If I was a newbie it'd put me off the site, or at least give me a bad impression of it.

I haven't clicked the link - who's it from?

Sorry, I meant the "2 people spied ... " ad

To stop Google ads switch search engines. Get Startpage which uses the same search method as Google but doesn't place cookies nor does it track your IP address. Also, install and configure Ghostery, a brilliant widget that detects and blocks tracking cookies.

No more targeted ads.

It's for an app callled "spyguard" Ironically.

I've had a look at the Spyguard link Ruby and it looks like spyware/malware. If you c&p the link it offers you a download that somehow seems dodgy. I did a search and it appears to be 'Scareware', ie it offers a free 'scan' and offers to clean up non-existent viruses.

Hmmmmm. It sounds "well dodgy".

I'd never click on a link like that (or indeed anything from a random site) My OH being an expert in digital security, but others might. It's a bit crap really.

Thanks again Nicholas.

Can you still see that ad Ruby?

No! It hasn't been seen since yesterday Smile

You're welcome Ruby. I got caught out by a similar thing when I was new to the internet. Now I have a traditional antivirus, Threatfire, two Flashblockers, AdBlock Plus, NoScript and Ghostery.

And Kitten Block to stop me going to the Daily Heil website. :)

Lovely, lovely, soothing kittenblock Smile

I'm a relative newbie and it quite spooked me. I'd just worked out that you can look at some people's profiles, presumably their choice to make them public, and had randomly clickeded on two people's, then there it was: 2 people have spied on you. Took me a min to realise it was just an ad.

@BeerTricksPotter

I saw it this morning when I logged on.

Any idea where BTP?
