Who else is fed up with swearing on MN?

I have been trying to have this discussion on another thread, but don't want to hijack it further.

I am thoroughly sick of excessive swearing on MN. I am sick of encountering posters with sweary names (not least because I have to hide MN as soon as the children come into the room).

MNHQ, could you please look at this again? Every time I mention this on threads, I am told that I have a cat's bum face (which is immensely irritating) and to eff off to Nethuns - yet I loathe the huggy/kissy/hunny stuff, and detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored. However, part of being an adult surely means having some consideration for other people too?

Here is Justine in May 2005:

"Hi all,
We've had a few complaints about obscene language on the boards. Our policy on this is that we would appreciate it if people would keep foul and abusive language to a minimum and that if you feel it necessary to swear to make your point then use asterisks please [...] we don't want to be over-prudish about this - we're not talking minor offenses here - and sometimes (parking attendant, gp receptionist annecdotes etc etc) we agree that nothing else but a swear word will do but it's a fair point that lots of members look at mumsnet with kids who may be early readers at their side and as the saying goes... less is more sometimes, so if you could use your discretion it would be much appreciated.

Ta very much."

That seems eminently sensible - but MN seems to have somehow slithered into a site for sweary people only.

Am I the only person who is utterly fed up with it?

I don't really notice it. Says more about me than my fellow MNers though, I think.

So if you don't believe in censoring how would you censor it !?Confused

I'm not fed up with it. I don't swear around my kids but am quite happy for c words and f words to be used on MN.

I don't like tons of swearing for no reason, but equally I don't think MN should censor out the swer-words if adults choose to use them. This is a site for adults, not children. And adults do swear sometimes.

I don't care.

I wouldn't censor it, ILoveTiffany. I would just hope (as Justine evidently did in her 2005 response) that people would just exercise some consideration as a matter of courtesy. That doesn't mean no swearing at all, just not the tedious stream of swearing that I seem to find on every other thread.

i really don't have a problem with it at all.

and i don't worry about my children wandering in and happening to catch a glimpse of a swear word on a screen full of text - they hear them in the playground from the age of about 5, it's not a big deal.

But then it opens up the debate as to what is considered to be swearing .... finding ways around the 'ban' ....

I don't like it, I think it detracts if a serious point is being made, but then that is prudish me ....

Can't you do your own censoring i.e. just ignore ...

crazynannawitchbitch · 10/10/2011 16:42

detest moderation. We are all adults and don't need to be censored.

On the basis of the two above qoutes,I am Confused about the OP

Doesn't bother me.

Do you ask people not to swear in your presence in RL?

For fuck sake, there are more fluffy forums or sensitive souls. I don't see lots of threads full of colourful language, but bloody sure this one will be. Grin

BJ I think quoting a statement from 2005 is a little disingenuous, if I may so

I suggest you look at more recent threads to get a more up-to-date idea of where the majority of opinion lies wrt swearing on MN

Asterisked swearing is so passe

It's for the huns. Not for us.

Just bother me in the slightest. In fact I enjoy some if the creative uses of swearing and user names. I tend to avoid swearing in thread titles as I know it bothers some with younger kids.

Report
toosoontoosoon · 10/10/2011 16:46

I don't mind it much. I dislike the thread titles that contain a lot of swearing and I agree with MNHQ/ that less is more, and you can generally be more amusing if you stifle it a bit.

I don't like blatantly sweary names OR the ones that refer to bodily fluids.

I just hide stuff if it's really making me feel a bit ill. I tend to ignore a lot of the sweary threads as I think they're very lowbrow and probably as crap as their title would suggest.

I have no objection to appropriate swearing inside threads though, none at all.

Wish I didn't agree with you at all OP as you were such an arse on the other thread btw

Report
HoneyPablo · 10/10/2011 16:46

I am not bothered by it all.
Sometimes it is funny, sometimes it is unnecessary and sometimes it adds to the discussion.
I don't find it offensive.

Perhaps the MN techies could devise a way to allow posters to opt for the swear filter....

I say: Fuck off you cunt

OP sees: off you

(obviously if OP opts for the swear filter)

Can this be done MNHQ, huh, huh??

Everyone is happy, no?

Report
PinotScreechio · 10/10/2011 16:47

I agree, OP.

Can we have tickers too?
And fluffy names?
And can we also be really heavily moderated?
And can we reverse the name of MumsNet to...?

Pur-leaseeeeeee?

FFS.
