Oh FFS.

You are a prime example of why children should be taught to spell and type properly.

Oh I am glad it's not just me getting fed up with this one.

Still, thanks to OP I have finally learned how to hide threads

No lets see

1 : this sort of stuff was tught to most kids in cub scouts before that got unpopular

2 : It gets kids away from ipods, computergames, sitting on their buts and out into the outdoors

3 : It makes science stuff like structure a bit more interesting when say using it to build your own shelter likewise say heat conduction with insulation.

4 : It teaches you how to be effecient on a budget and make greater use of whats around you

5 : Gives a greater appreciation of nature and the environment

6 : It encourages lateral and inventive thinking

7 : It makes life easier when going to festivals and camping

8 : Gets kids away from their estates and city life

9 : gets them less boarded withtou their technology

10 :_ May actually come in handy one day to keep them alive.

No meds... 10 rational logical reasons... where are yours to counter it

'resourcfukness'

I want some of THAT

Resourcefulness ok...

Those who concentrate on typos, name calling, giggling etc do so only as they can't actually counter answer the issues and topics raised with a rational, logical, well laid out argument backed with some form of evidence...

again prove the 10 points wrong

How about you prove the 10 points are correct?

join the military. you learn field craft and get paid for it.

1 : this sort of stuff was tught to most kids in cub scouts before that got unpopular

Easy enough... look up any book on the scouts

2 : It gets kids away from ipods, computergames, sitting on their buts and out into the outdoors

You have to walk around outdoors. Taking away the electronic gadgets enables you to teach other things...

3 : It makes science stuff like structure a bit more interesting when say using it to build your own shelter likewise say heat conduction with insulation.

Well if you dont follow the structure and insulation lessons ya freeze and your shelter collapses

4 : It teaches you how to be effecient on a budget and make greater use of whats around you

Making a tent from sticks, bin liners or better still plant material is cheaper then buying a tent. More so putting kids in a situation where they have to put whats around them to use starts them thinking about things in a new way

5 : Gives a greater appreciation of nature and the environment

One getting out will help, also showing how to make use of whats around you and how its limited

6 : It encourages lateral and inventive thinking

You learn to take things apart and use them in ways that were not origonally intended.

ie paper clips as fishhooks, cans as cutting tools, if hot could make a water weel with sicks and cans and attach a fan made of whats around you. Cds as signalling devices, etc

7 : It makes life easier when going to festivals and camping

Kinda helps to know dry wood burns better than green and how to make a safe campfire the easy way

8 : Gets kids away from their estates and city life

Duh obvious one

9 : Gets them less bored without their technology

Theres more to life than playstation. ie rock climbing

10 :_ May actually come in handy one day to keep them alive.

The recent issue of brit tourist in the Aus bush comes to mind

No meds... 10 rational logical reasons... where are yours to counter it

Reasonable point only my way you dont have to kill or mutilate anyone and dont get killed or mutilated yourself

That wasn't actually proof, more a series of platitudes. Where are the cold, hard facts?

Report
GentleOtter · 29/08/2009 12:31

Yes, I taught my children stuff like that but we live out in the sticks - not much TV reception, broadband crap etc so we have to do something.

IIRC Lavenderrrr advocated teaching her son to shoot pheasants with an air rifle so that, in the event of a plane crash, he would be able to forage and hunt to survive.

Report
GentleOtter · 29/08/2009 13:00

You don't even need a plane crash SoupDragon - the little buggers can often be found foraging in our vegetable patch. (pheasants, not sons)

true.

wingnuts who talk about field craft and survival skills immediately get me thinking of hate groups in Idaho and Montana all sandbagging against the black and brown tide.

most people manage to join and leave the military without ever firing a shot in anger however, if like they lately said that we will be in Afghanistan for the next 40 years then your chances of mutilating or be mutilated rises.

I can hardly begin to imagine the fun kids must have at camp learning these skills from the OP.

They must be beating down your door.

Or perhaps just kicking it in.
