2 methyl 3 butanal.. i hope i have the naming right. no i dont, coz its not an aldehyde, its a ketone. bugger. not sure how to name it now, or how to get the picture onto mumsnet.

why does it become a chiral molecule if hydrogentated in the presences of a nickel catalyst.

If it's a ketone, it will end in -one.

No idea about your question thought

Do you know what chiral means? Sorry, trying to work out where you are!

If it's a ketone, it's 2 methyl 3 butanone,

Chirality means non superimposible mirror images (hands are the best 'human' analogy of this)

Hydorgenation leads to the formation of a primary amine(via imine)
hte catalyst basically means it's more favourable for the hydrogendated products to exist.

More information on the overall question would help?

I can tell you HOW it becomes a chiral molecule....

Oh, glad its sorted - very remiss of MN not to include chemical sketching software in its UI . Chemistry is a lot easier with pictures!

Hi Stitchtime

I think we may be working on the same material.... saw your post and then went back to my studies and saw the question you asked about.

If we are would be great to keep in contact as we've only got just over three weeks....

Hi Stitchtime

It is the dreaded Gamsat - I feel like that too.

Not sure if MN would be ready for a full scale GAMSAT conversation though and would be good to swap ideas/study tips...Are we allowed/is there a way to get in email contact?

xx

hello i did ou level one chemistry last year (passed)
a level is prob much harder
but make sure you understand all the terminology first (maybe get a dictionary of chemical terms) then reading it and understanding it will be much easier
