Blazer sizing

I'm hoping to get DS a new blazer but the school is not allowing trying on of second hand uniform at the moment. He is 14 and 158cm and currently wearing a 31 inch blazer. His chest measurement is 31 inches, but the sleeves are getting too short. Anyone know with a similarly sized child know what size would be a bit big but not make him look like a year 7?

I (normally) do secondhand uniform sales at DS2's school and tbh from your description, I think our blazers must come from a completely different source from ours, if your DS can still wear a 31" chest one at his heightSmile. I would probably suggest going to a 34, but again, your sizing may be complete different. Have you got a parents' FB group you could canvass?

Thanks MarchingFrogs, I don't understand the sizing as surely the sleeve length is just as important as the chest measurement? I bought a bit big three years ago Blush. I should have gone with a 30 inch in hindsight as the sleeves were past his knuckles with his arms by his sides, now they are right on his wrist where you would wear a watch, he can move in it fine though. I don't want to get one so big this time.

No parents' group that I know of.

Hmm. Not the question you asked, but if he can still wear it comfortably, and you don't want to buy "over big", I would be tempted to wait until the next growth spurt before buying another blazer. He's at the age where boys suddenly shoot up overnight, sometimes skipping clothes sizes. I bought way too many clothes for my DS that he wore for about 2 minutes before shooting up to the point they wouldn't go near him any more. And, assuming he's at the end of Year 9, you ideally don't want to buy more than one new blazer between now and the end of Year 11.

Alternatively - he must have friends with older siblings at the school you can ask about sizing (maybe even some with Year 11 siblings who are looking to offload their blazer ...)

He has new size 14 shirts that are longer than the blazer so he will have to, shock horror, tuck them in at the back not just the front now. Otherwise, yes it would do. Might wait until September and get one then if need be.

Can you let down the sleeves on the blazer? There might be extra material at the end of the sleeves, or you can use hem tape to give you an inch or so.

I don't feel confident to try letting down the sleeves, I don't want to risk ruining it when it could go be passed on to someone else. It's only £8 I think for a new second hand one. Just going to wait and see how it looks in September then go for a 34 inch I think.
