Doing school work in the summer-

I have two children, both in secondary school, going into year 8 and 10 in the fall. Because of lockdown they can't go out with friends or do any clubs. I want them to study and catch up on school work for 4 hours day but they refuse to do so. Sometimes they play in our backyard and they have online violin lessons, but other than that its gadgets the whole day Am I being unreasonable making them do school work

YABU- No they should not have to do work
YANBU- They should do work

How are your children spending summer in lockdown?

The big question is how they engaged in learning this term.

I'm hoping my finish-year-10 will do some (but no way 4 hours a day), but that is because she has been unwell and managed more or less zero this term.

If yours have been engaged then I'd let them chill out, though that doesn't have to mean all day gadgets.

Yanbu.
I fully intend on continuing with some element of home schooling in the summer, as I feel not doing so will be more impacting when we've tried to keep going for what will be 5.5 months. Assuming goes to school in September.

YABU if they were working before summer hols started. They need a break. Maybe ask them to do an hour but they shouldn’t have to spend all their summer working as well as the school term. Sad

My yr10 will be doing some work throughout the summer but this is because she chooses to because she wants high grades. She has been working hard all year though so I will be encouraging her to also take some time off. I would make sure that they have 3-4 weeks complete break from school work but maybe persue other interests then.

Hang on, why can't they see friends?? Perfectly allowable under the rules (and I'm someone who tends towards caution with these things). With the work, I agree it depends on how the term has gone. DS (Y7) has been working really hard, so this is holiday time now. I'll make sure he keeps up with his music practice, reading, and I might try to do a bit of French conversation with him, but otherwise he's on holiday. But definitely not devices all day.

On the other identical thread in AIBU the OP clarifies that she is in the US, but with kids attending British school. I suspect their lockdown is still tighter than ours.
