All outstanding schools to be inspected within the next 5 years

It’s been confirmed today that outstanding schools will be put back into the normal inspection cycle in September 2020, after being exempt since 2012.

Schools that haven’t been inspected the longest will be prioritised.

Couldn’t agree more noblegiraffe! Am pleased they are back in the cycle now but not pleased overall with Ofsted.

Good. It would be better if they reformed OFSTED to remove the bias against schools in poor areas, but you can't get everything. DC are both in 'outstanding' schools lack of inspections has led to complacency imo, and doesn't account for changes in inspection focus over time. I have worked in 'good' and 'needs improvement' schools, much more stressful working in the latter, far more difficult to recruit staff, but really not much difference in the quality of teaching. If anything much easier to coast in a 'good' school.

The primary school my son went to hasn’t been inspected since 2008 - so much has changed an inspection is well overdue.

I thought Ofsted was going in the right direction with scrapping graded observations, the Ofsted myths document saying no need for lesson plans, triple marking etc but they seem to have gone backwards with this new Deep Dive stuff.

I'm not a teacher, but had two DSs in an Outstanding school. They're both young adults, now.

My 'issue' with OFSTED is that recently, the OFSTED reports for local schools bear no apparent relationship to the lived experience of the DC and parents of some of them.

Schools known to be good/outstanding, great results, happy, focused DC, good pastoral support, good SEN provision, expensive catchment 😉 - are getting 'satisfactory'; others you wouldn't board your cat at, formerly Needs Improvement are getting Outstanding.

What are they measuring?

its the framework not the institution .....

The inspection body itself is not the problem
(and stupid political ideas of destroying everything to get something new are just stupid)

A new framework
eg
ensure the best education for every pupil taking into account but not excusing their circumstances
would deal with the vast majority of problems

• some schools will never "improve"
• some kids will never "perform"
• half of all kids will by the laws of maths be below average

BUT
every school should support every child
every school should have access to the best teachers
every school should be properly funded
every school should be supervised and accountable during the time a child is normally there

if OFSTED supported those ethics
parents and teachers would support OFSTED

The secondary school my daughter converted to an academy in 2012 and that had never been inspected! Previous to that the school it converted from was last inspected in 2008! It’s had a new head, huge curriculum changes, cashed the structure of the school day and loads more and the academy has been running for nearly 9 years with no inspection!!!!! Beggers belief!!!!

listeningquietly I completely agree, much as I find inspection stressful, I believe its important and necessary, but it isn't really fit for purpose at the moment, and I'm not sure it ever was. It needs to be better funded but also less high stakes. So much I would reform in education if I could..
