Some trainee questions

Hi all,

I am a PGCE secondary trainee I started in September just have a few questions that Ive struggled with recently if anyone could help.

I gave a child a detention for missed homework deadline twice and when I spoke to her today she said its because her parents are separated and they live far away so she struggles with organisation etc. is it still right to punish them or give them detentions if thats the issue? I felt bad for punishing her but maybe I'm too empathetic?

Secondly a girl was misbehaving awfully today and I disciplined her. How do you deal with the anger and emotion that you feel? Sounds ridiculous but I haven't stopped thinking about it all day and how rude she was and could I have dealt with it better etc

I know these are a grey area and differ from school to school but just wondering what you usually do?

Thanks

Re detention & organisation.
As a parent, my suggestion would be that she talks to her form tutor on how she can organise herself & homework. Many pupils will have divorced parents and will be having to juggle between 2 houses (with maybe one of those houses not being conducive to good working if other MN posts are anything to go on).
How long are you giving for homework? DD tends to get pretty much a whole week for any homework. If you are setting on Fri to be in on Monday that could definitely be an issue.

re behaviour - no advice, apart from channel your inner Elsa 'let it go' tomorrow is a new day.

(ps There is also a 'The Staffroom' board you might find helpful.)

With the first one, talk to the usual teacher of the group - they'll probably know whether she's playing you or whether she should be allowed a little bit of leeway. I taught a lad who moved between separated parents and grandparents in a three-way custody arrangement - he managed it very well, even in year 7. She's got to get it sorted.

If you want to move this to the Staffroom (teacher board), click on the 3 dots in the bottom right corner (if it's the same on your phone) then Report and ask them to move it
