Secondary school uniform

This is my first post so please be gentle... DS is starting secondary in Sept. He struggles a bit with making friends and like most 11 year old wants to fit in. I realise this is a stupid question but is there a particular style of trousers that they all wear? Uniform guideline is just plain black trousers. Any suggestions welcome.I just don't want let him down and send him in something no self respecting yr 7 would be seen dead in. I am utterly useless at this.

I get mine from the supermarket, Sainsbury's usually. Just go to the school uniform section and choose what fits him best, slim fit, generous, flat front etc. I'm guessing your school will say no skinny fit trousers, if you get them from a school section in a shop they'll be fine. As for a particular style, well, they're all much of a muchness. Honestly, I really doubt you could go wrong!

I think you really need to ask the parent of a child already at the school.

DC's school specifies a particular type of trousers, but in reality will accept anything that is vaguely the same so there is a reasonable range of brands and styles. I'm not sure the boys get particularly concerned over black school trousers (shoes and bags more worth focusing on).

Also, if he has a blazer, don't be afraid to get one with 'growing room'. Lots of the Y7s will have blazers with arm length close to their knuckles.

If he has a 'going up day' get him to pay attention to the bags and shoes of the current y7/y8s to get an idea of what is common.

Thanks for the replies. That all sounds reassuring. He has a "going up" day this week so will check out the shoes and bags. I'm worried about that too. Haven't seen any specific instructions re: trousers other than black which is why I thought there might be a range of styles. That makes sense redskylastnight I can see trousers might not be the focal point!

At ds's school, skinny trousers are the norm - I get his from M&S as they do extra long

If they are allowed to wear trainers for school shoes then get him trainers.

Adidas, superdry and hype for school bags in this part of Glasgow. It might be an idea to go have a nosy at leaving time, all schools are different

Secondary teacher here and mother of year 7.

Most year 7s wear a slim fit trouser. Not skinny. M and S do ones that still fall free of the leg but are slimmer. Black socks and Clark's style shoes with laces.

Looked at the M&S website and trousers seem to be skinny or slim fit so hopefully that will be ok. He'd love to wear trainers but they are not allowed except for PE. He hasn't actually worn shoes for years as his primary school does not have a uniform; tends to wear trainers most of the time. The whole school uniform thing is new to both of us.

The M&S skinny fit worn here and they last well and a good fit.

Don't send him in regular fit, slim fit the norm for secondary boys. If the school allows skinny fit most will be in those but my ds's only allowed slim fit. Be careful with the shoes as well, have a look what most wear.

My great discovery on the shoe front if your son is into adult sizes (sz 10 in yr 8 here) is that Dr Martens shoes last far better than Clarks, and if you buy the ones sold as safety shoes (not steel toe caps) they are cheaper than Clarks and nearly half the price of DM shoes sold otherwise. DS has wide, difficult to fit, feet and after destroying a pair of shoes quickly, the DMs look pristine still inspite of playing football, cricket etc at lunchtimes in them

I’d deffo go for slim fit or skinny fit ones... bag wise something from JD... I’d get him having a look at what the other kids have... also check the uniform out... ie my DSS school had a jumper and a blazer..... on a handful wear the jumper most don’t .... so we bought one in year 7 that went un worn!!

I get ours from M&S, they've just had a 20% off uniform but it might have finished now.

They wash and wear really well and they have a great range of fittings. We have slim fit or skinny leg which are fine for our school which has a strict uniform policy. Even skinny fit at M&S aren't skin tight.

The shirts at M&S are also really good, I get the slim fit non-iron or easy to iron - neither need ironing and dry really quickly. They even do a range of easy dressing, my son has learning difficulties and some physical issues so this range is brilliant for PE days when he struggles to get un-dressed and dressed quickly.
