Since being in year 11, my son has been refusing to go to school. He has become completely overwhelmed with the pressure of doing GCSE's. We took him to the doctor who diagnosed him with mild depression. He was referred to the NHS NELFT Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Service, where we met with one of their practitioners. But now my son is refusing to see him again. There is a waiting list for a counsellor, so we were willing to pay for one instead, but he still refused. He has done no revision whatsoever. We had a meeting with the headmaster, who has let him drop subjects and put him on a part time timetable. We really thought this would be the answer, but no. He did have a trial morning at a college he would like to go to. Its mainly aimed at apprenticeships. He enjoyed the trial day. If he gets low grades in Maths and English, he can re do it. What if he doesn't do the GCSE's at all? Would a college still let him in? Are there any other parents out there with the same problems with their teenagers? We feel so alone with this.
