Exeter Secondary (and Primary) schools

Can anyone give me any advice on schools in Exeter.

As far as I can tell most of the primary schools look okay but I have read less positive things about the secondary schools.

We are moving to the area and DS will be starting his GCSE course soon so would really like to make the right choice for him.
Also have younger DC who will need primary school place.
I haven't got a fixed idea of area yet but it would need to be South/ East or central because of commute.

Does anyone have experience of the grammar schools in the nearby area? Are they really worth considering for an academic child despite the commute?
