Mid-low ability DD, Now y9. Revision for defined tests only, otherwise nothing extra. (i.e. No going over work 'just because').

Not in yr 7, couldn't be bothered but seems to have transformed into a studious little thing in yr 8. I reckon three hours of revision per week and seems really driven by results. I am like 🤷🏻‍♀️ what has happened!

No, just regular homework. If they have an upcoming test, homework is revision.

No. Ds1 is in year 9 now and has finally understood that the goal of revision is to be able to understand and remember the stuff - not to be able to say you revised.

Although dd didn’t do much in year 7 either (and got a clutch of 8s and 9s last year at gcse, so must have learnt how to revise somewhere along the way)

Year 7 and Year 8 are for enjoying a wide range of subjects, the bliss before whittling them down for serious study. Obviously revise for tests, but generally I would say no general revision is necessary, and any extra work should be for extension and fun.

No, just revision for tests, but dd does get a lot of homework, including revision for lots of mini tests.

No! Just set homework and small amount of revision for tests. Save the extra revision for GCSEs in year 11.

In yr 7, I just tried to engage ds with his subjects. We went to museums, watched documentaries, or visited places that he was studying.
He did his homework and revision for tests and exams.
I think it is worth doing weekly revision for maths and language vocabulary though.

No unless actually set for HW ahead of topic tests or exams (one lot at the end of the year).
Mine are Y10 and 12 now. Y12 didn't start doing extra work for GSCEs until the Christmas holidays for mocks in January, and then didn't restart until about March.
Y10 is still only doing revision for specific tests.
No wonder kids feel so pressurised these days!

No absolutely not. Just a little extra for tests. 30-45 mins homework per night. Otherwise he is busy playing football three times a week and attending Scouts once a week. He will be doing a 10 week shooting club after school once a week after half term too.

DS2's school have sent out a letter advising Yr7's should revise for 20 minutes every night for Maths, English and Science (so an hour in total) in preparation for the end of year assessments. Suggested some study guides too. DS2 is not thrilled.

@flatpackbox please tell me this is true! Ds has had lots of review 2 assessments over the past two weeks and it's been a pita trying to get him to sit down and revise.

He quite likes the language revision, which isn't really revision as such, just me talking to him in German and him answering me. He probably finds my pronunciation quite amusing. Anything else though....gah! it's so frustrating as this is just the way things are now, get used to it! Then again, I can't remember having anything like this amount of revision or tests this early on in high school.

Good or bad thing, who knows.

Little and often works with ds. Unsure whether this has proved successful yet as we'll know results after half term. If anyone has any tips or turnarounds after having a dc who really doesn't 'do' revision please do share

At my DD's school in Year 7, only did homework and revise for subject tests (which could be at end of a half/term, or end of a topic) and end of year exams. If there was a test/exam, then revising for it would be the homework.
There were, also, weekly tests in Spanish vocab.

You're kidding?? That's a huge amount of pressure to put on young children. Is it a selective school?

no, not selective it's our local mainstream. The letter also says they are supposed to do some at the weekends too and those in top sets should aim to do more than the suggested time! With a list of study books to buy as well. They are discounted compared to Amazon etc, but it still comes to more than £20
