14 year old on a managed move

Hi, my son is waiting to see ADHD consultant for first time which is in Dec. He is on a managed school and is now in his 6th week. He is struggling with the demands of the school, the work, the teachers and just wants someone to listen to him and how he feels. I am in touch with the education dept at the moment to see if they can help as he has been threated that if he doesn't concentrate this week the move will be terminated Friday so I now have a son who will not go to school but he cant see the point - WITS END!!

Can the Local Authority offer a place at a PRU? Some PRUs offer help to pupils who are close to permanent exclusion. What about the SendCo at the current school? What have they suggested?

It’s very difficult when DC won’t engage with school at all and many schools are less tolerant than they used to be. I hope the LA can help.

Look outside the mainstream. A PRU may be suitable, but there will be other options. My eldest has just started an alternative education placement (he too has adhd, with other diagnoses and an inability at this point to manage mainstream). School pushed a managed move at first, I refused this as the things he couldn't cope with in one mainstream secondary would also be an issue in any other. I wanted to avoid PRU. I don't know what area you are in but even if you just google 'alternative education placement uk' that's a starting point. You may have to be a hardarse, I have had to be, but it's worth it.

Thanks everyone. The LA are looking at PRU as well but the one in my area has a bad reputation but they do offer a practical course as well where you do plumbing etc for 3 of the 5 days and then 2 days maths and English. I have managed to get the two schools to now speak and try and arrange an emergency meeting. I think its so hard for parents as well as kids :(

Does he have an EHCP?

They are looking into an EHCP at the moment. I just wish his first school had done this last year and we may not be where we are today. I am told it can take up to 21 weeks for one to be put in place.

Has school already applied? If not then you should do so ASAP.

Are there any specialist schools in the area which might be more suited to his needs than a mainstream secondary?

The present school have done nothing apart from put him on report to help him! I have gone through the education who have said they are going to look into EHCP asap. A meeting is now being arranged with both schools. He is fed up and so am I of them just thinking he is disruptive. It seems only myself and him know the real problem. To be honest the guy at the Education is being very supportive so hopefully now he is on board things might get moving

Without an EHCP it's hard to access more specialist provision.

Really schools should be bending over to help managed move students settle in (assuming the child is doing their bit).

On a positive note, the fact he has reached week 6 suggests the school are open to keeping him. If schools want rid because the child has made a horrendous impression then they'll tend to keep a lot of everything and then terminate the managed move.
