Sports Btec- how much work?

Hello,
My ds just been told his option choices. With triple science he shall be doing 10 gcses. He has also been allocated Sports btec.
Obviously, he has to do PE anyway. However, how much work is that?
[Dance [and similar] other option in that block which is a definite no, no!]. We chose nothing in this block as felt he had more than enough to do but has been allocated it anyway...
Any info welcome!

It's a lot of coursework. One of mine did it and really enjoyed it. It was their soft subject

BTEC sport is very different to core PE.

Lots of writing involved.

Surely he has to have something from each block otherwise his timetable wouldn't be full.

Does your ds play a lot of sport? Iirc he will be expected to play on a team outside school.

Lots of coursework. Dd will have completed her last module at Xmas (she will be in y11) and sitting her GCSEs in summer 2019

No need to play on a team outside school. At our school it's compulsory and most kids don't play on a team.

I thought he would just get core PE.
If too much work, guess that could still be an option?
Think 2 hours PE a week compulsory.
He is not that sporty in that he does not like football and rugby.
Can you explore umpiring? Linesman? Referee type stuff or is it a very fixed course...
My worry is that it will be a lot of extra written work on what he is doing already.

He will have to do an option from that block. Isn't core PE just normal compulsory 2 hours PE? That won't be an option.

The course is rigid AF, in our school its full of kids who aren't smart enough for GCSE PE and are being babysat through a qualification. (that's probably a bit harsh but it's not seen as an academic option).

Core PE is usually just one hours a week. I don't understand OP, did you hope to do one fewer GCSE and get two frees a week? Or did you not get an option from another block?

Don't know much about PE BTEC but it can't be v hard if it's easier than GCSE PE, DS2 is getting pretty high marks in that.

If he's not sporty is there another option he can do?

Btec PE IS NOT EASIER than gcse PE it is different! And better tbh. But there is more coursework.

Core PE I note now is in same block so could drop Btech I think.
However, if not too arduous and maybe helpful in achieving rounded education, may be he should do it.
Option choices have been a right pain. He could do 9 gcses but has negotiated with school to do 10 due to interests.
I however, worry he is doing too much...

Core PE and btec PE are not the same thing.

Mine all loved btec PE. Dd2 did it and is on the oxbridge pathway at her school in case anyone thinks it's mickey mouse

(sorry not to imply it was sport btec that it her into the oxbridge pathway, it wasn't but it was a welcome distraction!)

Gretol, what did they love about it? My ds could do with keeping up fitness and would this help? He is not naturally sporty but tries and could do with keeping up exercise.

If he’s a top set academic-y type he’ll find the coursework element really easy.

Dd found the anatomy parts easy but the practical element made her think a bit. I think she took it because she wanted to 'monetise' her PE lessons iyswim

He is a little prone to putting on weight so an exercise/ healthy life style thing could be useful generally for him as well.
If written work manageable as well, that is great.

Just to warn you, though, ds found the coursework easy, but indescribably tedious! He enjoyed the practical stuff, though.

Box ticking may get to him a bit but hopefully, the practical stuff will make up for it...
