Just wondering if the number of physical education lessons vary between secondary schools and what the standard is. Went to see a school and they say they do 2 sessions every other week. DD currently in primary does 2 sessions per week.

My Y8 DS does 3 or 4 hours a week (2 week timetable) plus 3 hours extra curricular.

My Y7 does 4 hours. 2 hours of games and 2 hours of general fitness stuff.

Ds - state secondary - 2 one hour lessons per week

When he was at private school it was 2 x 1 hour 20 min lessons per week plus a 40 min swimming lesson.

Year 7&8 do 4 lessons per week (50 mins each). Y9 do 3 lessons and the rest do 2.

Lots of after school sport and attending a club is heavily encouraged, almost mandatory but not quite!

How long is a session? My Y7 DD at a state school does 7 1 hour lessons over a two week timetable - 5 one week and 2 the other (so averaging 3.5 hours per week). When my oldest DD and DS got to year 10 and 11 they were doing just 2 hours of core PE a week, down to 1 hour after February in year 11.

DD year 10 does 4 lessons (1 and 3) plus netball squad and netball club. Quite a lot I think

Most secondary schools have a 2 week timetable. dd had the equivalent of 4 hours spread over the fortnight as 2 "double" periods each week. These were on different days of the week (apart from Y11 which was always Thursday afternoons).

My son's school has a one week timetable at his comp - they do 2 hours a week, right through to end of year 11.

Not enough!

My kids do 2 x 50 minutes a week. If children choose PE as a subject for exams they do more.

Daughter just started grammar school. They have a 2 week timetable with three 50 minute PE lessons plus one 100 minute games lesson over the two weeks. So averages out about the same as two hours a week I suppose. Same as primary.

Yr9 child does a triple and a double period each week. Maybe matches on a Saturday as well and there are also a lot of clubs.

But it is a pretty sporty school.

2 hours per week is the basic timetabled. Obviously there's optional sports clubs and if you're in the school teams that's on top. Same as primary.

One full afternoon plus another double plus matches on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays.

Plus 5 lunch time activities and also after school if she wanted.

2-3 times a week, going by how often he has to pack his PE kit. I'll ask him later.

ifonly4 Wed 04-Oct-17 14:53:40

My DD had two separate lessons a week, so allowing for changing 30 mins each session.

ChoudeBruxelles Wed 04-Oct-17 14:55:31

Ds has two classses a week , so 2 hours. But there are loads of extra curricular sports clubs for him to do too

Couchpotato3 Wed 04-Oct-17 14:56:46

Lower Sixth, 2 afternoons a week (3 hours 20 mins)

TeenTimesTwo Wed 04-Oct-17 14:56:58

DS2 year 9 does 3 hours over 2 weeks (week 1 / week 2 timetable). Last year he did. Last year on a standard time table he did 2 hours and 45 minutes per week.

DS1 year 10 (special school) does 1 hour per week of PE plus a whole morning of duke of Edinburgh.

Thank you. I am trying not to get clubs into the equation. Only the standard part of the curiculum PE.

The school does run fitness club netball, volleybal, baketball, yoga, bagminton, dance, fencing but this are optionals, some in the morning, some at lunch and some after school. But these are optionals and not sure how easy is to get into them, I imagine there will be a limited number of children in each one.

DS yr9 does 2 hours of games (outside) & 45 mins PE (indoors) per week.

DS's (private) school has compulsory sport after lessons from 4-5.45 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thursday afternoon last year was devoted to training for another sports activity or DoE, volunteering, CCF sorts of thing. Mostly very physical. No obesity issues at this school.
