English language GCSE remark?

hertsandessex · 31/08/2017 22:42

My DD got a 7 in English language GCSE and wondering about a remark. I know 7 is a good grade but she was expecting higher (an 8 or A in old money), got A in almost every subject and a 9 in English language.

She got 122 so 5 marks off the boundary of 127 for an 8. I guess unlikely to get 5 marks in remark but how much risk of dropping 9 marks back to a 6?

She got 85/96 in Paper 2 but only 37/64 in Paper 1 which seems odd so a chance of improving Paper 1 (although maybe Paper 2 was too high and could be downgraded!)

I am inclined not to take the risk but DD seems to want to try. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't. My Dd also got a 7 and I think it's a great grade. Dd actually got an 8 in paper one and an 8 in paper two but a 7 overall, 1 mark off an 8......I do think it's odd that she can get an 8 in each paper but then get a 7 but am not going for a remark.

A 7 is a grade A, I wouldn't go for a remark, they are usually only recommended if you are one or two marks away from the higher grade.

The teacher has said unlikely to get 5 marks but also said discrepancy between the papers is strange and my DD is convinced she did better on paper 1. Yes I know an A is a good grade but see my first paragraph. I know 1-2 marks seem to be standard. I don't mind paying the money for a remark - just worried about possibility of dropping a grade really.

The Paper 1 marks seem low. Can you ask for a mark break down for SPaG, Section A and Section B so that you can see exactly where marks were lost?

I would firstly ask her teacher for marks per question but the marks this year have been wildly out. We have had frankly shameful uplifts, one boy gained an additional 36 marks on Lang P2, another pupil 22 on Lit P2. It seems to be admin errors rather than marking. I would ask for a remark just for P1 to secure her marks in P2

Interesting Redsrule - I will check with school today. I didn't realise could just get a remark for P1 which would make things much easier. I thought had to be much the whole thing.

So had P1 remarked and up 13 marks from 37 to 50 so overall up from 7 to 8. Seems to have been so many big mistakes in marking this year. What a joke.

Congrats to your daughter HertsandEssex. You both must be pleased and good as a 7 was it's great that she has the 8 and it's more in line with what was expected of her and her other grades.

Let's hope it is a bit better run next year and going forward.
