Hot weather and tights and school uniform

Is my child's school the only school that insists on tights as school uniform even when it's over 25 degrees?

To be quite honest, most girls who choose to wear a skirt to school will wear tights in the hottest weather, in my experience. Crazy but that's how they are. I also know lots of girls who will sweat in shirt and blazer rather than take their blazer off and be seen in just their shirt.

My DCs school likes them to be as cool and comfortable as possible so they can learn.

Socks can be worn here - my daughter wore black trainer socks last year but that was unusual for her, normally it's tights all year (and jumper by choice!)

At DDs school they can wear white socks all year round if they choose.
Normally in prolonged hot weather we get a message that they can dispense with blazers too. There is never an issue with them being removed in class anyway.

Why will some girls not bare their lower legs?
We don't have this issue at our school, all of the girls wear grey or navy ankle socks.

Doesn't seem to be the done thing at secondary school. Dd might go for ankle socks tomorrow though if it's warm again

Ours can wear whatever they like under skirts! (Academy!)

DSs' school (co-ed) is having summer uniform from tomorrow, so blazers are optional, tights can be swapped for white ankle socks, and ties can be removed with permission.
DD's school allows socks or tights year-round, she's wearing white ankle socks, cunningly folded down so as to be almost invisible. However they have to wear their wool blazers into school then lug them around all day which seems pointless. Although being wool, they are probably not as sweaty as polyester.

Our can wear what they like under skirts. Blazers can be removed after Easter without asking teacher first. Academy (but with common sense).

No summer uniform here at all. Ties also worn all year round.
The school skirt is a thick heavy pleated monster of a hot skirt too

No uniform at all at my dc's secondary. Dresses or shorts must be no shorter than mid-thigh, no strappy tops, crop tops and no visible underwear. No backless sandals or flip flops.

At DD's school they are allowed to wear plain white ankle socks between beginning of May and end Sep. Still have to wear their blazers

No school I've worked in insists on tights.

Equally, every school I've worked in has allowed children to remove their blazer.

What happens more is that students insist on wearing tights, wearing tops under shirts, wearing the optional school jumper and then complaining about uniform and being hot! (Any student who is sensible in short sleeved shirt seems to be fine).

But hey, it's a bit warm and there's at least 3 "school, uniform and heat" threads si I'm just predicting that most of this week there'll be lots of them.

I was reading up on DDs prospectus the other day (she's Yr6).

They insist on blazers being worn in all weathers too and can't think how hot the students must be in them. They did say permission is granted though so hopefully someone is using their common sense.

Wearing tights in this weather too. Poor things.

The reason the girls choose to wear tights is not because they're embarrassed by their bare legs - it's because their skirts are so short they're worried about flashing their knickers.

And that will probably be why your school insists on them.

DD does not roll her skirt up. And yet it is still too short for her due to it just plain not fitting very well.

See at my place salty a properly fitting skirt isn't too short on 90% of girls.

What does make them too short is rolling them or, the new way around rolling, girls buying them in the sizes smaller so they fit high on their waist (the skirts are tailored to fit at the top of the hip) so they are stupidly short but can't 'technically' be told to roll their skirt down.
All that means I have more phone calls to make.

My DD got around the short skirt issue by wearing shorts underneath as did most of the school

I think decent thin tights can feel. Enter than sweaty legs!

Although local school to us has banned rights below 40 denier and personally I only wear thick super soft tights!

We also have a sensible school who allows pupils to remove blazer and tie in this weather - some tell kids to wear PE kit.
PE kit is worse imo. Think T-shirts and nylon shorts!

At my school the Head decides whether students may remove their blazers on a daily basis.
Everyone hangs around the notice board on hot days waiting for the laminated sign to pinned up with a flourish by the head's p.a.
Once, he changed his mind halfway through the morning and caused chaos by deciding that it wasn't as hot as the forecast so blazers had to go back on.
Control freak? Micro manager? He also spends time looking in bins to see if staff have mixed up recycling.
Hilarious. Not.
