Secondary education

So who else is anxiously awaiting letters this week with offers of secondary school places?

Letters here go out tomorrow, so we should have them by Friday. It seems a long time ago since we were filling out our preference forms in September. These last few days, waiting for news, are the worst.

They are sent out 1 March here. Had a panic yesterday and went to check the date.

Shouldn't be any probs with ds getting in as dd is there but I keep thinking, i did fill all the forms in.......

I am. DD1 has sat for independant schools. We're quite lucky in that I know she will get a place at the local high school, which is not a bad school, just huge (which is why we looked at ind), but she has really set her heart on one of the independant and the competition for places is high, so am already rehearsing what we can say if she doesn't get in.

Similar situation with me, Berries. DD has sat her 11 plus (in November) and wants to go to the Grammar school. However, here you only get one offer, and we didn't want to put all our eggs in one basket and put the Grammar school first choice, as there are no other good secondaries, with the exception of the Catholic secondary, which is what we put as our first choice. She's at a Catholic primary, and we're churchgoers, so she will more than likely be offered a place there.

We felt that it was safer to secure her place at a good secondary, as if she were to fail the 11 plus, she'd have to go to our catchment secondary which is not a good school.

As you say, competition for places is high with the Grammar school, and a lot of parents at our school have done the same as us, Catholic school first, Grammar second. So it's going to be like a bun fight trying to get places and letters of support from our school etc once those results come out.

We're waiting for 11+ results for DS2. Well, the school has known the results since the end of last month, but we parents (who obviously have little interest in the matter) only get to find out when the school allocation letters come out. They are sent out tomorrow, but, if you submitted your application online, you can check the website at 9am (why 9am?? why not 8am so the poor child knows before he goes to school??) to find out.

I'm not this year but am watching, with horror, as Brighton and Hove (where I live) makes headline news for its lottery approach to school placings.

We were doing ours online back in September, were halfway through the form and the bloody thing crashed, so we decided not to risk it and filled out a paper form and did it through the school. So I'll have to wait for dear old postie to plod his way to my door on Friday.

Isn't it so annoying that the schools know the results so far in advance of the parents?

We did our application for High school online (first year they've done this) received confirmation email then received letter in Sept asking why we hadn't registered for any schools! They had completely lost all record of our application even though we had confirmation.
Luckily because they sent out the reminders I was able to sort it out (apparently they had about 20 other people in same boat).

Would have been fantastic on Friday if we found out she'd not got into the independants and she hadn't got a local place because LEA had stuffed up

Cheers.... DD rang up her friend who sat the exam for the local independent school, and she hasn't got her letter yet... do they really give these letters out later than the other state schools?

All LEA results here (Cheshire and Trafford) are released on 1st March, posted if you've not applied online. The independants also release all offers on 1st march but they are all posted, so will be anxiously watching letter box on Fri. Have told dd that they won't come until Sat at the earliest as don't want her worrying all day at school.

DS2 passed his 11+. Max score for each paper is 140, with 120 being the pass mark. He got 140, 140 and 132 and is into the grammar of his choice. So chuffed for him. He won't know until this evening so hope his day isn't too anxious.

I applied online and would you belive that their server has gone down. Might still have to wait until morning now

Are you in Kent? I tried to get onto their website for over 45 minutes this morning. Apparently their IT department is working on it. Fat lot of use that is to parents who have to go to work. What's the point of telling parents they can get the information online if you don't set up your system to cope with the anticipated volume of traffic??

I ended up contacting the school and got the information from them.

bananaknickers~cant be sure for your council, but I phoned ours last week and they will not be posting results online until after the post has been delivered tomorrow, so don't panic! I have pounched on the postman every day this week and told him he MUST be here before 8.30 tomorrow. Poor love, I'm sure i'll do his best! I can't concentrate on anything and as for tomorrow, we won't get anything done - the phone will be going all day!! Good luck everyone (oh sh*t - I'm getting all teary eyed now!)

BTW - if you phone the sorting office where your post comes from, you can ask them to put your post aside and you can collect it yourself for 7am.
